I am trying to learn how to do more work on my boat. Can somebody walk me through removing and replacing the flywheel? I need to replace the stator. Also how are CDI stators? are they better then factory Mercury. This is on a 2.5 260.

thanks shawn

You'll need an OMC flywheel puller to do that. You'll also need a 1-7/16" socket for the flywheel nut. Get that off first, then thread the puller into the three pulling holes on the top (same as the lifting eye goes into) and pop the flywheel loose. Lift it off and the stator is just below it.

STV read a little closer or put on your glasses the man wanted info on a 2.5 260 merc . STV just poking fun . v8 you just need a merc flywheel puller you can get the two in one style that's a puller and a lifting ring for a few bucks more then a socket and breaker bar for the nut or a good impact gun off only then the stater is preety much a r and r I forgot how much to torque the flywheel nut to some body else shoud have the spec. stv ???

The cdi stator is fine, and in fact cdi has a full high performance set for your motor, stator, switchboxes and trigger, for high rpm use. We've sold and used several recently and have no complaints,Chris

Wire from the Stator has a tag with the # 96455A6
Engine serial # 0G205332
Switch Box # P/N332-7778 A-1 ( 1985 )

I had it in the tank and noticed when I moved the Stator harness around it seemed to pick up rpm's ? And does the 1985 mean that the switch boxes are from 1985?

# 96455A6 is that the trigger not the stator, I just read that on another thread. If so it was the trigger harness that I was moving when the rpm's went up.

The trigger wires are small and the insulation gets gummy if you have a WD-40 habit, the trigger should be replaced if moving the wired effects the engine, you'll still need the puller, you'll also need to re-time the engine,we can supply what you need, chris

For what its worth I have the best luck with OEM electrics might cost a few bucks more BUT IMO you get what you pay for on most ALL Outboard engine parts...
