I Have a 2.5 Merc on a 22 foot jones Tunnel its recently been freshened and i am pretty sure that it is pretty stock. I am running a 4 blade 26 pitch PRO ET i am only able to turn this motor 5300 RPM with trim up and jack plate up and i am also having trouble out of the hole with alot of prop slip then it will finally catch it almost feels like i am not getting full throttle i checked and i am getting wide open?? iam wondering if there is any hop ups maybee a set of reeds i am just looking for your opinion on what i can do to make this thing run better without spending $$$$ 5,000 anything will help give me your input !! Also how many RPM should i be turning this motor?

Thanks,
Danny:thumbsup:

Hi Danny,

FIRST Welcome to Scream and Fly !!!!

Need to know more about your 2.5 engine as the 2.5 comes in HP ratings from 150 to 300+ HP. All addition information would also be helpful about your boats set up, weight , geographic location ( altitude) so folks can give you some ideas of whats happening with your rig..

don't mind...
And those that mind... don't , Won't or will EVER
matter."

If your motor really is a 200 it sounds like it may not be running correctly, although we need more information on the rig, pics would help.Meanwhile you could cover the basics with a compression and spark test to get an idea of the condition.Welcom aboard, your on the right site, chris

The 40:1 is fine for a 200 merc in "sport"service, but the 5300 rpm is dangerously low,the rpms should be in the 58-6200 range for sport use, your badly over propped or not making full power,Chris

Welcome to Scream and fly Danny!! I have to Echo both Jay and Chris (more information and pictures). We don't live to far from each other so I know altitude isn't an issue. You mention mixing at 40:1. So can we all assume that the OI system has been removed? Carbed or injected engine? Lower?

There's a wealth of knowledge on here once enough information is posted you'll most likely get the correct answer.

Pretty boat, did the previous owner make any claims as to performance? Was it rebuilt to sell or did the owner decide to sell later?Have you talked to the shop that built it?You need to do some investigating,I dont have personal experiance with that package, but I would guess it should be a little underpowered with a stock 200 to be really fast,i would think 70-75 would be in the ballpark, but I might be off.You really need to speak to the previous owner, chris

A drag cowl and side ram steering? It looks like that thing was setup to go seriously fast at some point in its life.

Just from the pictures. That motor looks like it is sitting way low. What lower do you have on it? And I agree with Chris. Even with a stock 200 2.4 you should see 70's+.

Try a smaller pitch prop and note the change if any in RPM's & speed.

And yes it is a very nice looking boat.

This boat was advertised with a 2.4L 200 when for sale on the buy and sell section. Either way you are low on RPM. Nice Rig!

So do you have a 2.4 or a 2.5? Can you post pictures of the power head? We will be able to tell from the block.
Sent you a PM.

I came within a few dollars of owning this boat (my mistake). The previous owner had to have about a million dollars invested in this thing. Seemed to be a great guy with high hopes. Very up front and honest with me during our dealings. Tried to have everything professionally done and correct. He bought a lot of good stuff for it but bought the motor last and was probably a little financial handicapped by then. The motor is a 2.4 carb with velocity stacks and a low water pickup and that is about it. It has had a lot of work done on it (the boat that is) and weight was estimated to me at around 1400# bare hull. Seems pretty stout for a 21" tunnel. First thing to do is prop so you can see if this motor has any nuts to it or not. From there I would, if it was mine, look for a bigger bullet. My plan was twin 260s. You got you a beautiful ride with some neat history behind it. 300x would really rock. Enjoy.

Too much boat for a 2.4 to" really fly" so to speak,I'm afraid.Your not going to get there with "add ons",chris

Add on's don't do much IMO. Again IMO You need to do a compression and leakdown to see exactly where the engine really is. You also need to SECONDly figure out why the RPM's are as low as they are. Once these things are established then you can go from there. Heads are the Big bang for the buck, good reeds and a 1" spacer. After that You are in the $$$$$$'s There is so much about this engine that is unknown. What charging system? Flywheel? etc.

Oh and BTW you never answered if the OI was removed or not. Mixing at 40:1 with the oil injection hooked up ???

Not trying to bust chopps but alot still needs to be answered.
