ok, so my new [to me], hydrostream viper has a built/frankenstein v4 crossflow on it. from the shape of the skeg, it appears to be at least a '78, because the trailing edge of the skeg is raked aft, instead of straight up and down.

the tilt/trim mechanism is the kind that has the motor on the left, the tilt ram in the middle and the reservoir on the right, with two trim rams... when viewed from the rear. IIRC, this is the desireable, "newer" setup.

problem: it will trim through the full range, just fine, but when it comes to tilt, it will run to the limit of the trim-out, and the motor will keep running, but it will not tilt. the seloc manual, [not as good as the factory manual, i realize], lists three possible culprits, one of which is the manual release screw. more on that in the next paragraph.

suspicious manual release screw:
when the shipper delivered the boat to my house in southern cal, all the way from central minnesota, he arrived at 11 o'clock at night. the boat and trailer were on a flatbed. the motor was stored full down, [trailer is high enough for this], but they were worried when backing it off the ramps that the skeg would drag, so they dicked around with the manual release screw, which i didn't even know existed, so they could tilt it up manually, and hold it there with the service lock. it could not be tilted up using the power trim because the boat had been winterized and the battery was dead'o'rama. well, while they were dicking with the manual release screw, one of them released it too far, and it shot out into the street... in the dark, and a jet of fluid went with it. by dumb luck, we found that screw and put it back in. but now there is a slow leak/drip. about a drop every couple of hours. it could be from the manual release screw, but i'm not really sure yet.

one more thing: i have not checked the reservoir level, and i don't know if it could be causing the problem anyway. remember, the trim out and in works fine. it's just the tilt-up that doesn't. i suppose i should check the reservoir level first thing?

that's everything i know for sure right now. thanks for looking.

Have someone pulling up on the lower unit while someone is running the up trim button. Chances are it is low on fluid. Look for leaks or wetness aroung the chrome rams, especially the center (tilt) ram.

You can also loosen the manual release screw and attempt to lift the motor.

Oil level is correct when the motor is tilted all the way up and the oil level is even with the screw threads. Use AFT Dexron or the J-E Tilt and Trim Fluid
