Doing some PM on my 81 / 2.4 and drained the lower unit gear oil to change it out. Smelled like a cesspool. Very strong nasty oder. Been using mobile synthetic gearoil and noticed it last season somewhat. The oil was very dark in color with no water present.
Anyone else experince this on their lower unit when pm'ing.

Run a magnet through the old oil see if it picks up anything.also sqeeze between your fingers see if you can feel any grit that's about it.Gear oil has sulphur in it that's what usually stinks but it should not smell burn't.

Probably better off to run Merc High Perf or Amsoil marine, most the automotive synthetics turn a dark grey. Not poss but think they don't like any moisture, same thing happens with sled chaincases. JMO

The smell comes from molybdenum disulfide. Rotten egg kind of smell. Doesn't take much of a leak to know you have one with that smell.

Refilled it with Merc high perf stuff.

Oil had no metal particles and felt pretty good....just dark color and smelled like my a$$
