Like night and day. The 2.5 has 11 more cubic inches, a better induction design, steel sleeves on production engines which is just plain more reliable. Better and lighter rods, Larger upper and center main bearings, Kinda like comparing chicken salad and chicken manure... They both come from a chicken but just ain't quite the same.

What year 2.5 motors are best in the 225 HP range? When did they go with oil and fuel injection? Would that be the best choice? the 260s and 280s seem more problematic than the others from what I have seen on this site...If I can afford it over the winter I want to put on 2 300X motors...Al

:iagree:T-rex Knows it. There are alot of old 2.4's still out there doing what they are supposed to do. Both great motors.

2.4 is a good motor evry weekend we run 50 miles at least and 49.9 my 2.4 is to the wood wfo. and never misses a beat but good oil right jetting and 93 octane all play a roll

Also, due to competition from Yamaha, Mercury´s quality got a lot better in the early nineties, which coincided with the introduction of the 2.5 liter engines.

When did the oil injection models come out? Is there an advatage of those over the older premix models? Al

Advantage: You pour oil into a container instead of into the fuel tank.
Disadvantage: You have a crappy oil injection design that is likely to at a minimum require the purchase of a couple of oversize pistons, boring, honing, balancing and rings when it fails.

With that being said are there alot of oil injection failures? If so it may be wise to go with the non injection motors...Are all 2.5s fuel injected? Thanks...Al
