I just rebuilt my sportmaster and shimmed everything by the book. Everything went smooth and it seems to work fine. One thing that I am not sure about is the shifting. If I shift it into rev and I move the prop back and forth a little I can feel the dog ring rubbing on the gear before it starts up the ramp. In fwd it doesn't touch untill about half way up the ramp. It doesn't make any difference when I dissconnect the cable and push the slide further toward fwd so does not look like a cable adjustment. In nutral neither gear is touching. I don't see anything that can cause that except for a worn cam. Is that a common problem? It didn't look worn when I had it apart.

Thanks,
Bob

Did you check the springs inside the shift rod per the book while it was apart?

I didn't take the shift assembly apart. The dogs looked good and it shifted fine before the pinion lost a tooth. I now wish I had taken it apart because tonight I changed the oil (ran it for about two hours yesterday to break in the new gears) and found a few little chunks of steel stuck to the magnet. They look like left overs from the failure and the only place they could have been trapped is in the shift assembly. I cleaned everything else thoroughly but of course just washed the shift assembly as a unit. I guess I will have to go back to the book and re-read the section on the springs and see if I can figure out how that affects the position of the dog ring.

donmac, as you can see I never took it apart so IF it was on right before it's still right.

Thanks for the replies. This is my first time doing a gear case so need all the help I can get. The gears run quiet so I must have gotten the shimming right. Very little metal in the oil except for the chunks I mentioned.
