View Full Version : Dry Stacking, How I Do It.

This is how to run your exhaust 90% dry. This will decrease a little low end and will gain some top end. It sounds great. This is for midsections with the liner removed and exhaust relief holes installed. It is also only for one piece exhaust plates. The first picture is pretty much self-explanatory. Either weld up all four dump holes or tap with a 5/16 18 and put in stainless or brass threaded set screws. If your plate only has two dump holes then plug both of them. Drill a 1/16 hole pointed right at the water pump to cool the pump housing. Drill both sides of the exhaust plate and tap with 1/4 pipe thread then install two 90-degree 3/8 hose barb fittings.

Here is what the right side and hose should look like.

As the picture says use 1/8 stainless fender washers in the heads and run a 3/8 hose off the popet. Water pressure is fine tunable by blocking the popet dump or using smaller orifices to control flow.

P.S. Don't be alarmed Bobby, I've had a black motor a long time, it's just broke.

how can i be sure i'm lined up right to hit the water pump with the cooling spray? is there a way to test my aim?

us1
10-23-2002, 09:17 AM
Just do the best you can at judging the angle. It’s not hard because the water sprays into a wide fan with all the water pressure and exhaust gases. Watch the water coming out of you popet dump tube when you are going fast and you will see how it disperses.

I sent an article to Greg a while back how to do that with a dozen pictures on how to do it to 1 and 2 piece tuner bases and some other things I do to my cooling he wouldn't post it don't know why? He may still have it to send to some of you guy's.

What about running a tube down a few inches and then crimpin end a bit to get the fan effect, would this work also or un a line down side of mid and direst it right at the pump from inch or so away so that pump gets max spray ?

John,
What are the chances of us "salt water users" plugging up that 1/16" hole? We have alot of kelp, and fine gravel around here. Our harbor boat's Optimax is always gettin crap in the thermostats and holding them open.

Could you glue a domed screen over the hole to help protect it? There would be no way of telling if you plugged up until you melted your waterpump right??

Thanks for the write-up!! I love it!!

I have never have one plug. All 260s have 1/16 drain holes in the cyclinder water jackets and I havent heard of a problem with those.

Whats a 2 peice or a one piece?

Is there a reason I should dry stack? Everythings apart so that isn't an issue just wondering if the trade offs are worth it.

US1, as you recall, my 260 came with one of them aftermarket exhaust plates on it. Do I need to do anything to it? I have a blockoff plate on the poppet valve.---- No dump hose coming off of the poppet cover. Thx

PS Hey Virus, I too Would like to see Moss's article.

You don't have to do anything to it. But you could drystack that plate with my instructions if you like.

is there a reason is there someone it may cause trouble with like mercury marine or affiliates or any copywrite stuff? or just your homegrown kickbutt own way of a cooling system?

Greg Moss
10-29-2002, 03:54 PM
My own homegrown way of doing the cooling. Don't have a clue why he didn't post it was supposed to be done like his lower unit test but he didn't want it I guess. Wish I wouldn't of wasted the time twice to send it to him. Oh well! If I get around to finding it all again maybe I'll post it on havasu barney .com
:D

Talon2.5
10-29-2002, 06:23 PM
hell send it to me i'll write it up in all your words and post pics as a greg moss cooling tutorial :D whatcha think!!

Techno
10-29-2002, 09:42 PM
I guess since top end is my main goal I'll do it. This doesn't seem like a very hard mod to do.

Now how about a solnoid or cable valve to dump water at the low end but seal it on the top?

I like cake, so wet system on the low end and dry on the high?

us1
10-29-2002, 10:58 PM
That is a good racer trick and it works.

Techno
10-30-2002, 05:32 PM
Then with all winter to do this I'll have my cake and eat it too!

DaveR
10-30-2002, 05:54 PM
John,
Is the loss of some low end the only down side? What about tuner life?

us1
10-30-2002, 06:22 PM
I have never had a problem with the 1/16 hole method. It still sprays all over the inside of the mid section.

DaveR
10-30-2002, 10:13 PM
So that method is a compromise? Not truely "DRY", but close to the same advantage at the big end, and yet still life from the tunner and no melting of the pump? Sounds too good not to do it. I'll make it one of the winter projects! Thanks.

us1

You always have to run some water or everthing melts.

LakeRacer99
10-31-2002, 03:30 PM
John:
Will this affect the paint on the midsection by running hotter? Will the water "Bake" on there. Seems like when you remove the can from a stock motor, you are cleaning the outside of the housing more. How will dry stacking affect this?
Thanks

us1
10-31-2002, 06:44 PM
It does not hurt the paint but it will, as you put it, bake on the water. Nothing a little pool acid and water wont wash off though.

Kathleen Michelle

Guys, several weeks ago, I woke up about 4 AM and couldn't go back to sleep. I turned on S & F and noticed that Greg (Virus) was on the website. I sent him a PM: Up early aren't you? He said he'd been up all night workin' on the website. I've seen him on at odd hours a couple of times since. I'm sure he probably has a backlog of stuff to put on the site. Greg (Moss), I hope you don't take it personally that he hasn't posted your article. I'm sure it's just buried in the backlog. He does all this stuff by himself without help. I'm pretty sure he doesn't take time to read every thread and probably hasn't seen this one since it's more of a technical nature.

I personally think he needs some help.

ken medendorp
11-13-2002, 03:51 PM
should you aim the hose barb's down the mid section so it won't get hot and discolor?

pirogue
11-14-2002, 12:24 PM
Detoit Diesel has a check valve on the 92 series engines that let air box press. through and after i think about 25psi it closes to increas air box press. it's a 3/8 opening. perhaps you can plumb that into the water sys. it will dump water from idle to about 5000 then close for top end.

RichS
11-14-2002, 01:27 PM
You have a Det. Diesel part #? This sounds like a neat solution to the problem. (I love experiments:D )
