In 15 years of doing what I am doing this is the worst year ever. Business is less than 1/3 of what it usually is. This area is a hole in the ground. All I have is a mortgage, car payment, and a boat payment. I'm getting ready to sell off the car and the boat. At least I am not upside down on those. I signed a gas lease on my land which would mean huge bucks but NY won't let them drill.
I'm in the home improvements business and no one here is spending money. And if they do they are going cheap....
I've never had to resort to it but it might be time to sell off some toys.

Guess I'm VERY lucky as I am covered up with work and more coming in daily, EVERYBODY I know in the outboard repair business is swamped. I tell people that it will be a month or so before I can look at their motors and they don't seem to mind the wait.
I have a Buddy in the area that has a repair business and is a Mercury dealer and he told me as of last week he has 44 boats at last count to repair.
I read and gather the "crunch" is not as bad in the south with all the refineries near by as in other parts of the country although I work motors that are from all over..
Jim Ruck told me a couple of months ago while he and Deb were visiting JSRE he had 40 blocks on the floor waiting for them when he and Deb got back home to work , I have 5 blocks at Ruck's myself. Guess people are repairing instead of buying new who knows, I do know it seems people aren't willing to give up their toys no matter how bad the economy has gotten guess its a stress reliever and a needed "mental safety valve"..
DUNNO? I'm not complaining, gonna "make hay while the sun shines" never know when it may dry up...
Hopefully your business will take a turn for better in the VERY near future..

I have been doing local trucking (Containers, Air Frt, and local deliveries since 1988 and this is BY FAR the worst we have seen. Nobody needs warehouseing because they're keeping inventory low, so when frt does come in, its hotter than crap. Then the customer wants the frt yesterday and they will deal with someone else if they're a couple of cents cheaper. I'll be honest, its actually depressing. It gets old getting beat up on everything you do. If I hear "THEY" say its getting better, one more time, I'm going to go and find "them" and kick the sh** out of them. I actually also thought about selling my new boat, just so if something happens, I'll be ahead of the game. Later, Dave

That's not the problem at all, there is no hiring going on because corporation don't see a positive turn around as of yet. Hiring will continue to be very low until there are positive signs of a "TRUE" recovery underway, not the flim-flam Obama is putting out. The entire unemployment compensation system needs a major overhaul. There are more people collecting benefits claiming they can't work because of BS issues that are in better shape than you and me........health wise and dollar wise......:mad:

Now that is ****ed up!!! WTF??? I'd be ringing my state congressman/senators phone of the hook! Idiots!!!
Good luck!
I'm pretty lucky to not only have a secure job, but to be getting hit with overtime like crazy. Which is pretty benificial because my wife is an architect and hasn't worked a full week in over a year. I've been killing myself with hours to make up the difference and it's getting very old. Not too many people are wanting to build or renovate their homes when they don't know if they'll have a job tomorrow.

Lockheed Martin is big in this area and they have laid off thousands in the last year.
We expanded into solar installations last year because of the incentives. Then NY dropped the incentives to the point where paying for a solar system doesn't make sence. County and school taxes keep getting raised significantly every year and people are like rats fleeing from a sinking ship around here. Although they did just build a new WalMart down the road.
The only good thing on the horizon is all the potential for huge money from natural gas leasing around here but the epa and environmental nuts won't let it happen. Even though it's been going on just a few miles away in PA for years without incident.
It's just a big combination of problems around here and most of it is the state I think. I guess all I can do is just weather the storm. I was just curious how things looked in other areas. I know from talking to building suppliers that statewide things are down significantly.

the one thing that has really put the US in such a financial pinch is the bailouts. if the govt would have left it alone we would have gone through a cycle and it would have corrected itself BUT no we the public had to pay for vacations and new cars and whatever else which has added a few more years on the economic pinch.

In 2020 looking back on the decade. The recession never existed. If you can look a little deeper, you'll figure out what that means.

Why dont they see if they gave small businesses the money in tax credits to hire these people they would get it back in the form of income taxes and it is a win win for small business and the government, I guess it is just to simple, matt

IMO....I wouldnt say thats the whole problem but a huge problem. I have a friend that got laid off from a nice welding job from a large plant here and he has been collecting unemployment for about a year and 2 months or so. He has many many great job opportunities but will not accept. He will do a few odd and ends for a few people but says, "hey why do I need a job when I can collect?" He had several tractors, vehicles and what nots but has sold a few things here and there to keep from having to work all due to the unemployment. He says he is going to collect as long as he can. I told him he is treating this like a !@##@% on welfare. Dont get me wrong......I totally think some people deserve unemployment....but hey ......if a single mother of two children like myself can weather the storm for 6 months without the option of unemploment.....I think anyone can if they beat the pavement and try!! The problem with our economy AND our country from virtually every angle is that it's being run by TOTAL IDIOTS, and that didn't just start with obama and his current circle of 'em. None of these people seem to have any concept of how the economy works and what pressures enhance or stiffle it. Hillary says the only thing wrong with our economy is that taxes aren't high enough. As far as obama, he couldn't run a corner hotdog stand successfully without a government grant, and I can't think of more than a handfull on EITHER SIDE of the aisle in congress that're much better. Look at the resume's of this band of morons. MOST have never had real jobs, and they're ALMOST ALL lawyers or political science majors in college (those of 'em that have college degrees). Election time is all about politics instead of qualifications and virtually NOBODY in congress could flip out their resume and get even a mid management position in ANY successful company. obama is a total zero, biden is dumber than dumb (his latest brain fart listed in a paragraph below) and the list goes on and on.
For some reason that I'm at a total loss to understand, we elect lawyers instead of business people to run the government, which controls our economy. Unfortunately, lawyers receive virtually NO business training in college, although they are well trained on how to screw somebody out of something that they've worked hard for, take a large chunk of it for themselves, and give whatever's leftover to some dirtball that hasn't ever accomplished anything on their own. Our government strategy has become too much like the frivolous lawsuit/personal injury bonanza that many attorneys practice privately. We've now "regressed" to the point that it's politically correct for these libtards to proudly admit that redistribution of wealth is not only acceptable, but a desirable path for government to take. Strangely, those in government ramming these policies down our throats don't believe that the elite ruling class should have the same borders, and they continually reward themselves with luxurious perks with no budget. A news report this week said one congress person spent 60K on donuts, comrad pelosi spends MILLIONS of taxpayer money on her jet trips back and forth home (why in the hell shouldn't she have to pay income tax on that benefit when transportation to and from work IS NOT a deductable business expense for all the rest of us?) and reportedly spent over a 100 thousand on alcohol on same airplane last year. I guess everybody on the plane has to be drunk to tolerate a 4 hr plane ride with that arrogant bitch several times a month.
Anyway, we've got ONE FINAL SHOT at this in this November, or it's all over with. It's IMPERATIVE that we kill this super majority in congress with the elections and kill it THIS NOVEMBER or there may very well be another opportunity. Voter fraud was rampant and virtually unchecked in the last election and unaddressed since. It's been widely reported that without the illegal votes of convicted felons that were by law ineligible to vote, that Al Franken would NOT be in congress, and it's hard to say what may have even happened in the '08 election without the fraud of Acorn and other similar groups, and near as I can tell there's been NO REAL investigation and nobody's gone to jail.
Two more years of a bulletproof majority in congress and the illegals, felons, incarcerated felons, and anybody else that the democraps are sure they can count on for a solid, non shakeable block vote, and any significant conservative voice in congress with be something that will never happen again.
Newt was makin' noise about runnin' on TV last night, and I think he's probably the best chance America has of reversing this insanity that's taken over Washington, BUT............. I doubt that he's electable EVEN IF he managed to get the GOP nomination.

I am in the same boat has alot of us. The construction industry in ILL is at a crawl, income cut in half. Has for uneployment, I collected for 6 months and hell no I didnt go out and get a job making a third of what I am used to. Do the math carpenter rate 25.00 hr/ uneployment pays 12.00, why would you take a job down at the Home Depot for 9.00. Then you get laid off the 9.00 job and draw 4.00. plus the guy that was mentioned earlier who is driving the Jag surely paid his fair share to the fund when times were good, maybe he feels like he is getting back some of his own money invested in his uneployment INSURANCE.
