check with chris carlson marine I had talked to him last year about it.

If you have the 3 ram mid it can only be cut to a 16"

Stock castings are too thin, they end up cracking. You need to use a thicker offshore casting.

Transomstand, i have heard the same thing about the stock casing and always wondered: if it is thick enough to be a 20, why can't it be thick enough to be a 15? Not trying to argue because that is my understanding too, just trying to learn. thx,

My assumption would be, the heat changes the alloy somewhat, possibly making it more brittle, and prone to cracking.

It must depend on how its done... i've been running the same cut down 15" since 1992

This is a little off subject......can a single ram swivel offshore mid be put on a 3 ram swivel......

If you mean swap the can, yes it will fit.

If you don't have the 2K on hand for a used factory 15" mid., cutting one down is an option. As mentioned on every thread pertaining to cut down kids, using a standard bass leg is prone to cracking sooner or later, even if its done "right." We've been breaking them since the early 80's.

I'll only do an offshore mid. Stock ones always break. I won;t even think of cutting them

R L Langham has been doing them in Crestview Ky. for years and I have ran them on several boats without any problems. They reinforce the inside where they are cut with some 1" peices of flat bar, cut thew drive shaft and shifter rods.

I agonized over "adding all that weight" for years. Finally bought an offshore can, only weighs 10 lbs more that a stock can with a liner. By the time it's all cut up, the offshore shorty will weigh less than a stock 20" motor:o

I thought the weight and setback was mostly in the transom assembly/swivel bracket of the offshores not the can

I always thought the thicker can was much heavier, but that's not the case.

So it is the transom assy./swivel bracket where the weight is, correct? JW I'll never run one :p

With the factory clamp with 2" setback, I'd say yes. Mine will be a from a standard single ram, so I'll actually reduce weight a bit over a stock 20" mid.

ok, just wondering cause my friends got a stock merc single ram clamp with a 16in OMC taylor mid. Wondering what the weight difference was gonna be. Plus the pump in the boat probably not much savings but hell of a lot better trim.

I'm gonna weigh everything when it comes back, but I'm expecting to save some weight when this is done.
