have a 260 that i took from a boat that used hand gear and throttle. i use foot pedal and hand gear shifter. however i cant get this shift cable to work. is there a difference in the cables ? it seems like it does not have enough throw to operate reverse and forward. ant help would be great.

the shifter is just a simple mechanism. looks like something from rex or eddie marine. when i bought the boatyears agoit was powered with a johnson. now i have the 260 on it . will i have to change shift lever for the merc ? the problem with the cables from the hand control that came with the motor when i try to use it with the other shifter it does not look like it has enough travel to operate forward and reverse. thanks for your help.

Normally you use a Teleflex/Morse 33C type cable on aftermarket shifters. That may be all that's necessary.

.....then when you post, look for the attach File box down below where you type in text at. Click the browse button and browse to the file on your puter and attach it. You need to make sure it's small enough, I usually go 640 X 480.

...but if you don't have that, Paintshop, Paintshop Pro, or ACDsee, you can use Microsoft Paint to do it. Paint comes in most Windows platforms. Click on the "image" menu, then "stretch/skew" and you can make the image a percentage smaller in either direction. This was 50% then 50% again.
