Sporty got a Black Eye !

My sporty unit has been running great for the last two years, and is still running great. I just noticed this discoloration on the side of the case. Looks like its from heat. Nothing has failed yet, but Im kinda worried. I also found a small piece of metal in the gear oil. The metal is steel (magnetic). less than 1/4" long and flat.

The black eye, heat mark is only on the starboard side.

any ideas ?

A piece of roller bearing cage? Right in line with the bottom of the driveshaft, I would definitely do some exploratory surgery! Ya' sure don't want to start from scratch!$$$$$$$

it looks like part of the coil springs that hold the detent pins in. heat could be from springs rubbing on the pinion that are wrapped around the clutch dog i would be for looking it takes about 10 minutes to take it apart or 1000. for new gears and such just my .02
