What tools do I need to disassemble, and reassemble a lower unit off a Mercury 3.0 L lower unit?
What is necessary, a must have, what is nice to have, but not needed.
Is there a lower priced source of these tools, maybe a site sponsor?

I read some of the other posts on this subject, and the general consensus is I have no business being in there.
I know the tolerances, and backlash setting on the gears are critical. I know the forces inside the lower unit trying to push the gears out of mesh is probably several tons.
It is not the same thing, but I have taken volkswagon transaxles, swapped the ring and pinion into a different case, installed close ration third and fourth gears, and made it live with a stroker counterbalanced engine, pushing paddle tires in the sand.
I have a basically scrap 200 lower unit that I can practice on.

There are spacific tools for taking it apart and putting it together. These tools from Mercury arnt cheep. Sierra tools are a little less but I bet your looking at at least $1000 for them. Have someone do it who knows what there doing and ask if you can watch. Then you will know what your getting into. JMO
