to be honest I have been fighting that exact problem , Im pretty sure the actual problem (on my motor) is throttle shaft wear the vacuum leak makes the motor idle badly , the only fix is a slightly high idle ( which I cant stand ) so I use the little lever to raise the motor speed then do what you do and just push in gear quickly , hopefully some experts will chime in and help us , thanks steve

Jeff, What rpm is your idle set at when the boat is floating? it should be right at 900 in nuetral.
Rock shaft wear is a problem on the older engines, go up 3 sizes on your idle jets

thanks for the info. my motor in neutral idles fine, and running is fine, its just when you shift it into gear and go to give it gas it dies. then after about 3x restarting it it will go.

Check to see if you have a shift interupt switch like the merc IO's have . it shows in the clymer omc service manual if it's sticky that will drive you nuts as it knocks out a couple of cylinders when shifting for a split second unless it sticks.

Its running too lean, reset your mixtures, should be approx 6 turns out from seated. Do a full Sync while your there
900RPM in N in the water.

The actual proceedure is to just idle in 1/8th turn increments on all carbs, to achieve the highest in gear idle speed, while the boat is in the water.
