Does the boat have a jackplate? If so what is the distance from the propshaft centreline to the bottom of the planing surface?

Also these boats get waterlogged making them very heavy.

as i said this is my first boat got a great deal on it i think that the motor is to low and theres a hydrofoil on it to but the boat is slurping down gas i have know ideal what the jack plate is if its what connects the motor to the transom than yes it has one its in the middle hole it can go up two or down two plus i can raise it up by turning the bolts on the sides to:confused:

A jackplate is a bracket that mounts between the transom and motor. Its purpose is twofold: to provide a means of adjustment of engine height and to set the engine back from the transom to change the boat's centre of balance.

Probably best to post a pic of your setup and go from there.

no it doesnt have a jackplate just regular motor mount with powertilt

You may have too much prop there. What RPM does the engine run at when wide open?

woodys84viper
06-20-2010, 08:09 PM
it runs around 4500 or 4800 somewhere around there i dont have the tachometer connected right now since i am in the process of redoing the wiring

Are you trying to nurse this thing up, or do you stand on it, and wait for it to catch?

woodys84viper
06-20-2010, 09:35 PM
i tried to nurse it up and floor it and it catches when it wants to if theres any one in the boat i have to have them stand up and lean forward should i move the battery and fuel tank to the nose of the boat to try to even it out?

Try a smaller prop, it should run at 5800 or so at full throttle.

woodys84viper

what pitch should i use and any thing else you would recommend like a 3 blade or 2 blade cause it has a 4 blade prop right now

transomstand

The part number you gave is for a small ear 24 Chopper, it can't be a 4 blade.

woodys84viper
06-21-2010, 08:45 AM
no its a three blade prop i had to look at it again but the blades are pretty big on the prop

How the boat is set up and what prop you use depends on what you want to use the boat for. The prop you have works best when surfacing, which means the propshaft centreline should be even with the running surface, or thereabouts. This is the best setup for top speed. With this setup you will have to live with the prop slipping out of the whole, that is the nature of the beast.

If you want to use the boat for skiing and not have the prop slip you may want to get a through-the-hub exhaust style of prop.

is there a site that you would recommend for a new prop and what pitch should i use i want to use it for pulling tubes and water skis

You may want to try a prop calculator (http://www.rbbi.com/folders/prop/propcalc.htm), you will need to find out your motor's gear ratio and correct operating RPM range. And get your tach working.

Click here (http://www.rbbi.com/folders/prop/propcalc.htm) for prop calculator.

Yep, not the right type of boat for pulling tubes!

:cool:hey since my last post i have went and purchased a new prop and it a 13 1/2 and 17 pitch and my boat now seems to just get up and go and now seems to be faster any thing else i could do to make the boat faster i feel as if it should be going faster and do you know what color wires i need to run to the tach for a mercury 100hp 2 stroke

Woody, You are going to need two different props for two different uses of the boat, If you want to pull water toys, the 17 will work. If you want to go fast, the 26 was a little large, I would think a 22 or 23 would be better than your 26. You have to get the rpm's up to high 5K range. I'd bet you are way over 6k with the 17 and thats OK as long as you don't push the throttle so it runs over 6 for long periods.

i dont think i am running over 6000 rpms its the original prop recommended from mercury for the boat i think the aluminium is much better than the ss prop i had my engine idles better and there isnt the annoying clunk everytime i put it in gear but i want to go faster i am not satisfied with the speed for a 100hp on a little boat:D

The annoying clunk you refer to happens when you're swinging a "large" pitch prop and you drop it into gear.....gearcases are designed to be shifted as such yes, but they last ALOT longer when you wire around the neutral start switch and start them in gear instead. As far as the aluminum prop being better......for your needs and usage that may be the case ( your aluminum is a shorter pitch and lighter than SS) but for performance applications, SS is the only show in town.

TY for the compliment. Yes that's my viper...original apricot gel...and it's been in the water exactly 2 times since August 2008 which is when the craziness started(read:recore). It should hit the water in the next 4-5 days for the first time with the Merc V6 to do some shakedown runs....on paper it should run in or around the 80mph mark...maybe a smidge more if I'm lucky....we'll just have to see....

Fix your tach and get a water pressure gauge....first 2 items of business I would pursue if I were you. Best of luck!!!!

hey could you send me some pics of your interior to my email for reference because who ever did it before was a hacker lol but i have to get it all situated so i can just have fun and stop tinkering with it and wheres your gas tank located on your boat? my emails woodworthnicholas@ymail.com
thanks

I will be using two 6 GAL removable tanks that fit between the transom knees for the time being until I can fab up a fixed aluminum tank and filler neck. As far as interior pictures go....click on my resto thread in my signature line that says "resto thread here". There are some decent shots of the interior. Keep in mind that your interior is set up differently than mine. After 1978 (I think that was the change year) Hydrostream went away from the back-to-back seating and used 2 buckets with a rear bench. They also changed the floor height, seatbox, and added floatation boxes along the sides under the gunnels.

After searching for 2 years, I found a fuel cell from Summit that fits right in the space of two 6 gallon tanks, 22 gallons.

And they say plenty:D

Measure carefully, you should have plenty of width, the problem is the height, mine just brushes the bottom of the motor well. I made my own pickup, changed the vent, and added a mechanical gauge.

what prop diameter prop do i need to reach max rpms i am only at 4900 with the one i have now

Sonik
07-10-2010, 10:39 PM
With your current setup...you're limited.... 2 ways to accomplish this are to either..... #1 raise your propshaft height and surface it (requiring a low water pickup nose cone and jackplate obviously) or drop enough pitch and/or diameter in your prop to bring the motor into the proper high speed RPM range.....

this would explain alot why i think my boat eats so much gas i only have a 12 gallon tank i go out for a couple hours and it kills my wallet
