my 5 yr old projection tv went out last nite- we were watching and all of a sudden the audio went off, and the picture on the screen shrunk up. if you try to turn the power button on the red lite just flashes. if you unplug it and plug back in, and hit the power button on the picture comes on for about 5 seconds, but it literally is about 1/8 the size of normal, and then the tv shuts off. i was wonder if this is major(i was thinking it was a circuit board failure), maybe its time to buy a flatscreen? thanks!

Is it a Sony??? I had the same problem but with a 40in. Sony XBR, the cost was about $500.00 on a year old TV that originally cost me big bucks because it was the largest picture tube TV on the market. I had it fixed and have since changed to an LCD...here is some info on the red blink codes...

thanks, its a 60" panasonic, i'll do a search for the codes, but w/ the prices of tv's these days it probably doesn't pay to fix it unfortunately

How many hours are on your bulb? Some projections will do that kinda stuff after X amount of hours on the bulb (2000+ hours usually), but you can re-set the hour meter usually from the remote and it'll work like it did before.... just know that your bulb is about shot.

I've got a front projection, 8 foot wide screen  --- had a few front projectors over the years. Currently I've got a Panasonic that looked great for the first couple thousand hours, but now the LCD panel in it is getting funky and things are getting a little weird... time for a new one soon.

Sounds like the bulb. If it's a Sony I fell for ya.
Frickin' "light engine" is shot on mine. Turns out to be a design flaw that Sony knows about. They had a recall, but you only knew about it if your TV went bad before 2009. After that the recall is no good and your basically F---ed. So I have a backlit LED LCD TV now and it's not a Sony.

Well, you don't really need the remote - just need to get to the main menu of the thing and somewhere in the settings should be a way to reset the amount of hours on the bulb. I actually just had a similar problem with my Panasonic that I'm staring at on the couch right now... it'd go on with a flashing red light, stay on for a few minutes, then turn off. I reset the hours on the menu to zero and now it works again. I know the LCD panel is shot, and the $350 bulb is shot, but WTF I'll just run it until it really dies. It's summer, I should be boating anyway.

Eh, it's my third.. or forth.. projection now - can't get a bigger screen for the price. It was a $1200 at the time about 4 years ago - 720p HD and still looks damn good.

Got a 58" Sony in the garage that my son popped by turning on and off during the world series. Screen is all green I think. Hate to just toss it in the landfill. Been thinking about getting it repaired, but going to just finally buy a big LCD.

Anybody recyle this old crap? Got a 27 inch magnovox that works sometimes, that I need to get rid of too.

Dave, I agree!!! going back quite a few years,
I was always a Sony person until my 2700.00 TV I think it was a month over the 1 year warranty when I got the 5 red blinks and had to call a repair man (yes repair man, can you believe they are still out there) my TV is the heaviest one on the market at 400 lbs. you can't move it. The cost if I remember correctly was a little over 500.00 to repair, he had to remove the electronic board...it now sits fixed and I never turn it on, I will also NEVER buy another Sony TV as they wouldn't warranty it when they knew about the problem...
