Anyone ever heard of an L drive? A guy I know says he has a 90' Maxum 21ft and it is a I/O with a L drive and an Alpha I lower unit. Does this make any sense? I have always thought an L drive was a force outboard.

force outdrive that exits through the hull bottom! I thought they were only used on bayliners

WOW....thats wierd. So if this thing has a mercruiser lower unit then it does not have the "L drive" force. I take it this is something to stay away from if it does have the L drive? It is a 21ft Maxum cuddy......from what I could find the L drive only goes up to 120hp and that seems a little slack to push a 21ft Cuddy.

I remember the advertisments for the L-drive back in the late 80's or early 90's. They were only used w/ inline sterndrive engines. The big advantage of the L-drive was supposed to be more interior room in the boat.

thought it was the 120 outboard powerhead w/lower unit, crammed into an enlarged transom of sorts. Not as big as the normal space for the typical I/O, but not a regular transom either... just large enough to enclose the powerhead and leave the foot exposed.

Also just came to mind if memory serves correctly, the powerhead was offset on the chest by 90 degrees to make it slimmer fitting in the rear deck space.

If memory serves me right there is a plastic cover over the outdrive watch that it does not crack and stays sealed. Parts are a bite to find. The one I helped on was hooked to a 4 cyclinder force. Rick

I'm supposed to be going to take a look at this jewel today. I'll snap some pics and post them if I make it by there. This set up has got me curious.

What a wierd setup.... has a 4cyl force powerhead and a cheap looking lower unit right through the bottom of the boat.

Designed on a napkin in a bar in Wisconsin one night. The design never should have left the bar. I doubt if those two engineers are working for Brunswick anymore.

LMAO! Would be nice if you could interchange powerheads.......drop a 300X in it. This is making me miss my Vegas XT. I told the guy with the L drive he can give me $1000 and I will take it off his hands and sell the trailer. after talking with him a little it sounded like he knew what he had.....and it wasnt gold

yeah that lower unit looks like it would barely handle that 120 force!
