Guys

I have been pulling down a couple of 2.4 merc mid sections.
Can anyone help with an ID of the one on the Right.
One in pic on the left is a stock 200 2.4 I noticed the right one has alot bigger ports.

I am going to build up a 2.4 and wondering what this type of exhaust is used for.

Hi Mick, I would suggest that the plate with the bigger exhaust holes is from an early 2L 175 e.g 1976. I have seen the exhaust ports matched to suit this plate in some HP stuff but i.\,m not sure how much difference it makes.

Hi Kim
You probly raced against the motor it came from. One of the guys on the Vic site got me onto it...I used the gearbox off it.
I had a look at the block that was on it and it looked like it had a lot of work done on the exhaust chest.
I havnt been inside many of the these engine but the one piece tuner was new to me.

Definitely a 175 plate. When I first got this block I had several individuals state they thought it was an F1 block. I spose that was because of the exhaust chest but I think the early ones were all like that.

Thanks Rock.
So is the tuner a stock early 175hp as well ?

Yes it is. Early on in the v6 hot rodding the 175 plate was used by some as they felt it would relieve some back pressure. The good old bigger is better line of thinking. worked in some cases but not most. I even bought one of the first bridgeports that had the bottom of the block modified to match the 175 plate. This was done by a builder that, at the time, was considered one of the best.

Thanks for your help.
Sounds like you dont really think they are worth using to gain some hp?

It depends on your application. Drag race only on a light hull may see some gain but for all around use there would probably be some bottom end lost which may not be good. There are now aftermarket tuners available that were not available then that I would prefer over using the 175 plate. We certainly know more now than we did back then.
