So I greased the hell out of mine this year as it was a bit dry. Clamped on the grease pump to the nipples on each cable. After doing it when I turned the engine it was a bit stiff and i ended up pumping out a lot of grease of the far side which loosened it back up.

Is it possible i did something bad here or is this just a ridiculous question?? derrrr....

Cheers.

I've heard if you over grease with the cables 'extended' all the way, you can burst them when you bring them back in.
I've only greased mine once but I did it with the cables all the way in.
Hows the boat running?

You caused a hydrolic lock no biggie just remember to grease them with the ends all the way in. don't get carried away. some guys like to use oil insted of grease as it does not harden with age.

Yes it's possible. If I ever own rideguide cables again I'll never use grease. Mine got stiff after greasing and I never got them back. Ended up replacing them. I even tried injecting a couple different solvents to loosen up the grease to no avail

Adam, got to the chalkboard and write " I will never grease My rideguide cables " 100 times before You leave for the recess break... Kidding aside, it's not a dumb question that many have leaned the hard way... Grease is just too thick and will hydrolock life already mentioned, and sometimes so hard that You'll feel like Your gonna break something mechanical just trying to turn the engine...

Never grease them put gear oil in the hand grease gun and put it in that way and they will last forever.
This was taught to mechanics by Merc 30 years ago I dont know why the info never made it to the public

I thought the Merc 2-4-C was the factory recommended grease for the ride-guides. It's a fairly thin grease already.

No never grease at it will eventually dry out and hence tight cables.

I made a teleflex dual cable get armstrong stiff by greasing the steering cable tubes. Teleflex said I had to replace both cables. I made a cleaner/luber and fixed them.

Only a light wipe of grease like 2-4-C is needed. Next go around for me, which will be soon as I have to fix a transom corner joint, I will install the lube nuts and then use 5W30 synthetic oil for the lube.

Yes you can, just turn now all the way in and the grease will push out over night, put a rag under the cables to help with the mess.
