View Full Version : OMC Tech 85 120 V4 Loading up at idle or low speeds?

If I idle around at any slow speeds comes out of the hole terrible. Coughing and weezing and smoking as if it's loaded up. Make a WOT run and shut down to fish, fire up and immiediatly pin throttle comes out hard and clean. Idle for even a second or two and launches terrible again. Powerhead was freshened last season. Problem has existed to some extent since before I rebuilt it. Seems to be getting slowly worse and worse. Its on a restored Procraft 1650v.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.:smiletest:

Mine is the same, I've just learned to live with it. I just replaced the reed valves, we'll see if that helps.

Lower your float levels if trimming in makes it worse.

Check for a leaky primer solinoid.

Make sure the engine is at proper temp, the earlyv4 loopers never did idle real good but when cold are real bad.

I have carb kits that will be here today. Don't know if it's going to help, just figured who knows when the carbs were opened up last. I turn wrenches on cars for a living, but this has just got me baffled. Runs awesome on top.

Make sure the little check valves for recirculating fuel are not clogged, this sometimes will make it run richer at idle not getting rid of puddled fuel. Also when you rebuild carbs do not add the seat gasket if your bowl already has it built into the bottom.

Thermostats installed and carb kits done. Seemed to be better on the ears, just need to get it in the lake now. Thermostats were stuck open. Carbs looked gret inside though.

My V8 Johnson will do the when one of the power packs are weak. Weak spark at low rpm. To much oil in the gas can cause that also. I run Amsoil outboard oil and I mix it 80 to 1 premix and the motor is very crisp at idle and throttle response is instant. Is that a new or old power pack? What brand?

Old power pack. Had it on the water tonight. Way better all around. Sometimes though, it just seemed to jump right out of the hole, other times, not as good. Not loading up anymore though, and runs a lot better all around.
