30' velocity rebuild/repower/reeverything

well after owning this boat for a year and a half and not touching it, the time has come. i was ready to sell it as of last night, and then the boss "wife" said no:D. going to start from scratch, and go from there.

it has twin 235 x-flows on it that need to be gone through, but am thinking of going towards something newer. was even thinking of converting over to some good loopers, if i can get them to fit on my mids/lowers. if i could find a good set of mercs i may even go that route. any ideas as far as powering from first hand experience would be great. mph, gph, ect...

completely wide open at this point, and looking forward to the build up. thinking some kirky seats suspended may be pretty cool too. will get some pics up soon. did steve stepp build a kevlar hull 30'? removing the carpet reveals yellow cross weaved matt.

all suggestions, and comments will be welcomed. just do not want it to get into the classic black"merc" vs white"johnrude" debate that tends to happen.:thumbsup:

Loopers won't go on your mids. Don't know your budget but the new E-tech 250 HO or 300 Evenrudes are clean great on gas and make great torque for a twin set up on that boat, and the same thing goes for the Merc 300XS. Depends on your budget and preference but that would work well for you and probably get you in to the high 70s. Looking forward to seeing your pics.

Not sure what I will be going with as far as power. Would love to have some of the newer 300's out on the market right now,but don't think I will be able to spend that much coin. A couple of good/rebuilt older style engines would fit the buget a little better I think. Have a lot of other things that will need some addressing aswell. Will probably be selling off all of the 235 stuff I have laying around to help recoupe some of the cost.

I've heard mixed things when it comes to looper powerheads fitting on crossflow mids. Some people say you can't, and some say you can with adaptors. I dunno what is right. I guess seeing is believing at this point.

Pix's please :) Sounds like your are starting an awesome project and one I would like to tackle next. As to flow to loopers, they made an exhaust adaptor to do it but I wouldn't do it. Loopers are so cheap/easy to come by I see no reason for the head aches.
I have a similar project I'm thrashing on right now w/my 24' Sonic as you can see w/a thread on this same page.
I know loopers fairly well and would be glad to feed you info via pm's, e-mail or over the phone but not here. You can get some background on them by checking my website at http://2strokeonly.com/
Good luck and keep us posted. Gary

Thanks for the info. Lots of good info at your site, and I am sure I will be tapping you for info soon. Going to go out and start the deconstruction today. Will snap a few photos for everyone to feel sorry for me. She is pretty rough around the edges, but the hull is solid. Hopefully will be a fun lake boat for my family and I. Thanks again.

a few pics.

Yes the trailer is junk.... a boat holder.http://i50.tinypic.com/2z3pe3a.jpg

carpet is out now. http://i50.tinypic.com/2dhfn7p.jpg

Lots of work to go http://i50.tinypic.com/2je908j.jpg

The floors look good under the carpet, just need to remove the seats so I can get the gas tank out for cleaning.

This is after I removed the carpet. I assume the fuel tank is under the center section there with the screws in it. Looks like a big MoFo in there:eek:. Anyone have an idea of what size tank these boats came with?? I also found a good set of rebuilt 275hp V8's that may fill the bill nicely. Think I can get in the 70's with those and the right props???

STUPID south Louisiana weather!!!!!! Another thunderstorm to put a halt on a productive day. Try putting on a big boat cover in a strong wind. Not very much fun by yourself.

Don't get discouraged. Just keep your nose to the grindstone and before you know it you will have a garage big enough for all your toys. For some people the American dream is to own your own home. For us boaters we don't stop there, the American dream is to have a big toy box full of cool toys.

My toy box is already got other toys in it. Guess I need a bigger toy box!!!! Wife has been saying I need to get rid of my race cars for awhile now. Who knows..... maybe she has a point.

Anyone looking for a new toy????

Hey Bio,tell your wife that she made the best decision in her day yesterday!!! she wants to go out in the boat not to a hot car track,i made that decision 35 years ago i had a car and a boat, there are plenty of cool people that are into goin fast with boats. i guess stepp had plenty of that blue carpet, your seat looks just like mine but i did it in blue, just grab those 275's redo the interior, wax the outside that looks pretty good and GO BOATING tripps

The 30' Velocity is a great running boat! Get rid of some of the excess seating baggage in the transom, find a couple of Merc 300X's and you'll have a screaming boat! The 30' Velocity is one of the 1st hulls to break the 100 MPH barrier back in the day!

Great advice! I bought one thats just the roof from Harbor Freight for less than $200. and it covers almost all of my Sonic. Great investment. Acetone will take up all the left over glue from the carpet in your cockpit. Great looking hull and TONS of potential!!!

Jamesgang, thanks. Getting a bit outdated but I do the site myself and suck at it ;)

I don't think so. I like it its a great read. I only had a little time to check it out this morning but will check it out some more this weekend. Postin it here again if someone looks here and wonders what we are talking about http://2strokeonly.com/.
Whats your 3.3 engine worth and what can you get one to do on 93 pump gas. I may want to do something like that in the future on my 19' Laser.

Thanks again. I/we have to be careful w/promoting my site on here as I have not paid Greg to be a "vendor". Have planned to for a while but funds have been very tight and I haven't been able to put it together. I started it as just "informational" but then thought I might be able to make a buck off of it while looking for a real job. My next update will be to remove all of the ad's for my services and turn it back into a "how to" site only. Way more fun as a hobby than as a business venture.
As to the 3.3 project, was/is another dream project of mine I tried to pull off while Wayne Taylor was still alive in tribute to his creative talents but unfortunatley I ran out of time and money before he lost his battle. The motor has his mid and EFI system on it. It is my version of the ultimate OMC lake motor.
It makes spooky power and is the strongest O/B I've ever driven. I got in a hurry to make one of our rallies down here though and stubbed my toe out of the box by not having my act together for it and paid accordingly.
It has pretty much been sitting since I sold my STV a yr ago and is now waiting on me (and $$) to rig it on the Allison mule I bought for it. I am a vee bottom guy at heart and CAN'T wait to get it together. Once done and dialed I will drag it to my friend Spankys dyno for a reality check. Hate to guess on #'s but based on seat of pants and other race boats I've driven, I'd guess well north of 300.

Thanks for the support guys. Hey Tripps, good to hear from you again. Wish it was going to be that easy. I have to pretty much redo everything with interior being the last thing. Need to replace all of the hydraulics, and wiring before I cand get her wet. There are also a couple of spots that need some fiberglass repairs in the normal locations on these hulls.
Basically want to get it up and running real good before addressing the cosmetics and such. The cabin needs to be gutted and restored aswell. Not a big thing for me, but I know my wife would like to have it with useable with the little one. I kind of like the idea of nothing being in there as it will cut some of the weight off of her. May even try to put A/C in there down the road for them so they can have a break from the heat.
ChrisM, Was that your regal in the photo? If so, how did it run with those big Johnsons on there?

Correction...was the first. ;)

Only difference was it was an I/O version. Also, Steve is building off of the original molds again too. The 322 model is this same hull whereas the slightly older 320 model was a cut down version of a larger boat.

biohzrd

I almost wish mine was I/O, but I like the extra space the outboards give me. Plus it is much easier to work on an engine outside of the hull.

I think that is a good move on his part. If it aint broke, don't fix it. Will love to see some of the newer ones with the modern touches and tricks on them.

As far as twin O/B Vee's this is one of the baddest of the bad and on my A list. When I come back as a guy w/a real job I will own one. I hit every booth in last yrs Miami boat show and only one impressed me and it was Steve Stepps.
biohzrd, I have 100's of hrs of work into my Sonic project and wish I could bitch about hydraulics and "cosmetic" glass work. I'm still a bunch of hrs away from being able to say that.
If you do your home work, take your time you can end up with a REALLY rare, killer boat. You appear to have it together as far as what you have and what to expect and that is huge for a project like this. I pm'd you my # to compare notes. I will shock you with what I have done w/my 24' let alone what you will be able to do w/your boat.
Very cool.

Oh I know it could be tons worse. I do feel fortunant that it is in as good of shape as it is. I was very lucky to have found it let alone for what I paid for it. I really can't wait to have her back on the water. I love seeing pics of this model. I always liked the way the sat in the water. That look of being ready to pounce on any unsuspecting passers by.

Like them a lot. 39'?? Don't know that much about them though. Used to live 5 mins from their factory and spied through their fence every time I was past.
There was a 39' in Canada that used to have four V-8's on it and then went to I/O's or vice versa.
One of my things is having it fast enough and light enough to still be fun and still be powered with O/B's. When I did my 1st Sonic I kind of decided about 25' was it for me. I can afford O/B's and can work on them myself compared to I/O's. Much bigger than that 24' - 26' range either the speeds come down or you screw on a third motor which I ain't doin. I'm already old and gray from twins! Bigger than that you're also into dedicated tow vehicles and also a serious hand full to "single hand" which I do a lot of. Now if I could afford a lift on the water.........................
I really like this 26' as well. http://www.powerboatlistings.com/view/7802

Yea I've been out in that boat. Very nice rig. Mine with the triples is a 31'. I think on a 39 you have to be IO. Consider my boat with 3 engines is only 9 liters and 1-502 is 8.1. On a 39 you need big torque, tall deck blower engines.

Thats yours and it's a 31 :o Wow. In that case, I want a ride!! I thought it looked like a 39 from the picture. That thing should be a monster w/those motors!!!!

And yeah on the 39. You get that big it proves the addage that "their ain't no replacement for displacement". I remember seeing an old Chris Cat w/a pair of 2.5's on it way back when. What a pig.

Will do TRIPPS!!!! Wish it were that easy, but just may well be. There are alot of things that I am not allowed to talk about if I like my job and still want it. I will do my best to kill this problem if I'm allowed to. Go to the BP web site under live feeds. I will be over one of the ROV's doing the work. The whole world can see what I will be doing at my job. No stress at all:eek::eek::eek:

Hey Bio,

I Just found this thread. I am doing the same thing. 1985 30ft Velo OB. I'm the 3rd owner. Ran it a little with the OMC's Just about 70MPH on my Etrex GPS. The boat will be losing weight and gaining More OB HP. Boat drafts very little water. Wil be getting my base hull weight soon. My 4000 lb boat lift raised it with a little effort

Boat will get a substantial resto. Steering, Rigging, Cosmetics and Power. My rear seat construction looks about the same as yours. My dash is laid out different. My Carpet, Interior, Rear Floor, and tank is out. The label on my tank reads 165 gallons. My Cabin looks like a mild update.

Boat is was freshy with very limited salt time. So Far the boat is structurally excellent. I was lucky to find help in shipping it to get a trailer for it. I put a new Aluminum Ameratrail Tandem Bunk trailer under it and pulled it up from St Cloud FL to WI. They had the patterns and fit the boat. Beautiful trailer. Boat Drives right on, tows fast and fits in the garage with the removable tongue and quick brake disconnect.

I have some pics of where I am at on it at this point. Have done prelim reseach on setup andTwin OB Max speeds. Would like to trade notes when you have time. I've had over 50 boats big & small. This redo doesn't look to bad. I can be reached on my cell 608 347 0027. I tend to be a pretty busy 55 yr old guy. Work alot. if I don't answer please leave a message.

Scott

Hey, great to find someone else in the process of doing the same thing. Sounds like you and I are doing almost identical builds. Would love to see some of pics, progress, and just tap your brain a little. These really are great boats, and hard to beat for overall construction, and performance. Will give you a call soon.

That was right above the leak. The closer flare was the Natural Gas, and the farther flare was crude being burnt off. We were doing a lot of the intervention work out there. Truely a sight to see!!!! Despite what was being said by the media, BP was doing everything they could to get it stopped. I have never seen that much equiptment and manpower from a multitude of companies come together for a common goal. Unfortunantly there were a lot of things that we all had to learn on the go as nothing like this has been done before. Thank goodness it seems to finally be capped off!!!!

Started pulling the gas tank today. A little more than what I was thinking it would be. Everything looks great under the deck which I am thankful for. Should have it cleaned out, and fixed up by Friday. Going to go ahead and order a new fuel sending unit/float, and replace all of the lines. Will get some pics up soon.

who did you choose to build your motors?

biohzrd

No one yet. Still a little ways off from that. Gotta lot of work to do to the rest of the boat first. Still like what I am hearing from you, as you really seem to know 6cyl loopers. Like we talked about before, just looking to get around 70 wide open, while being able to cruise around all day at 50ish. Maybe 250hp apeice would get it there.

Just some good lake motors, that will get up and go on occation. Was looking at a pair of rebuilt v8's, but parts are getting hard to find, and they suck a lot of premium fuel!!!! I have 6 crossflows I have to get rid of also. May keep a couple of the lower units for spares though. Lots of stumps and debris in the waters I run in.
Give me a call when you get the chance.

No one yet. aimed at Scott. He and I have talked too and I gave him same recommendations as I did you and was qurious who he decided to go to. IMO, only a couple guys out there w/experience making power w/a looper, under heavy load for extended periods (not me). None of them cheap but you'll soon find (as we both agreed on the phone today), you get what you paid for and is well worth every dime.

Well everyone, it looks like the Velocity is either going to be put on hold, or up for sale. Had some bad news in the family, and can no longer work on this project for awhile. Don't really want to give up on it, but also don't think I can swing the $$$$ to finish it the way I want too in the near future. If I don't sale it, I will try and tinker with it when I can.

Scott., keep me updated on yours. Gary, thanks for all of the motivation, and help with engine selection. I have your #'s and will be lingering around here. I will still be around, and talking with everyone.

Thanks,

Jeremy
