This past Saturday, 5 young people were in a lake skiff, out on Lake Maurepas. They decided to stop and jump in the lake to swim before coming in to a local restaurant for lunch. 4 of the 5 people jumped in and apparently the last person hit the throttle / shifter of the boat, which was still running and in neutral.
The boat took off, circled and ran over the 4 people in the water. The boat ran for 40 minutes before running out of gas. Three of the people were severely injured and drowned. One was cut badly on his arm and broken hip, and life flighted out. One guy was unharmed. The young man that died was 24 years old, two girls, 20 and 14 died. One of the girls had a life jacket on, but fatally injured by the boat. The other two were 24 and 26 years old.
This is a freakish accident that should not have ever happened. Young people that are no longer with their friends and families. This is one of those instances of something simple and seemingly innocent turned very deadly.
One of my co-workers is on the voluntary fire fighter /rescue teams down here. He and his wife. They were in one of the rescue boats that found two of the bodies after the accident on Sunday.. One of the deceased young men was my co-workers wife’s' nephew. They stayed on the scene 25 hours attempting to locate the other missing person. The last person was found Monday morning.
Be careful out there folks. Please say a prayer for the victims and their families / friends.

I wish people would be careful, it's so easy to get hurt, or worse. My prayers are with all.

I hate to hear stuff like this, especially after a great weekend of boating.
A totally preventable accident.

That is sad and my prayers go out to all the families. This was an accident that shouldn't have happened. Accidents like this is why I believe there should be a required boater safety course for young people, like there is for hunting.

We used to do stupid things like that when I was a kid too. I used to sit on the top of my seat while at cruise speed in my Hydrosteam Vampire with a boat full of people and then just fall over the side with the killswitch lanyard attached to me, just to panic the passengers. God had Guardian Angels on a double shift looking after me/us.

I know the feeling. As kids, we used to do the most stuipd things that were so much fun back in the day. As we get older we tend to coach the youngen's not to do what we did....
I think God kept me alive for pure punishment sometimes ..... as I too have outlived the luck of the cats 9 lives many times over.
The most smiple things can go south in a second when a person is not prepared.
I once waxed the crap outta my XB-03,, gave her the best going over ever! Went to a lake in New Mexico for a day fisihng trip, me and my black Lab, Beaux. I caught a nice smallie, was letting Beaux lick it before releaseing it, as he always wanted. Turned ,dropped the fish overboard, Beaux pressed against my leg as I stood back up, I stepped onto the newly waxed nose on the Xb, foot slipped, I was going over but tossed my rod into the boat, as the water was super cold still, did not want to loose the rod. While I was twisting on the way over, my head hit the side of the front deck hard enough to suck in water. All I could do was hold onto the trolling motor, hoping ol' Beaux would not step on the foot control pedal for me...... You never know.

Just to reinterate on one of the other members comments about testing and licensing , in Ontario they have implemented a "Boat Smart" license for everyone that operates any vessel whether it is a kayak or canoe or powerboat, and it is a graduated system (horsepower to age ratio). The beef I have with this scam is that you have multiple attempts to get it and you can try as many times as you need too 24 hours apart.
So basically NO ONE FAILS, and I,m sure if the next day you asked 10 people 10 questions they would get most of them wrong.
Sorry to rant, but if you are going to license people to operate a motorized vehicle why should the consequences of your test be any differant from a boat to a car??? as they are both weapons in the wrong hands.

There are just so many things that can not be taught in a boating course that seem to only be learned the hard way.
I constantly see fallen tubers and skiiers being circled boat drivers at high speeds to get the rope back to them as quick as possible.
I had a friend who circled his daughter to get her the rope handle back. The rope snagged in the water and then popped out traveling across the water at neck level. It sawed through her neck and left her entire esapogus/larynx esposed. She did live but is scarred for life.
I have had people do the same thing to me and I will duck underwater [which is hard with a vest on] just in case the rope "skips".
