Question was asked on another forum about what consists of a normal 280 rebuild? My reply was:

When I agree to do a rebuild on a customer's 280 it consists of all new rings attached to top pinned pistons ( Wizard being my choice ) New high performance bearings (ALL of them), new seals , "O" rings, oil check valving , TDR reed valves and injectors cleaned and flowed at Brucato's.I make sure the bores are within 1/2 thou. of being perfectly ROUND if not I CAN alter an egged shaped bore to make it round. I hone the nicom bores with a special ceramic hone and finish the bore with a plateau brush for a micro finish. I set all the parameters of the TPI as well as the fuel curves on the fuel management systems to compliment the owners geographic location After the rebuild I run at least 3-5 gallons of fuel through the engine at my shop BEFORE the engine is shipped back. Motor is cleaned , shrink wrapped and shipped back in wooden crate with the 2 base gaskets furnished as well as flow sheet from injectors , complete break - in instructions as well as detailed invoice..

All JSRE rebuild customers are WELCOME to come and witness any and all aspects of the tear down , mods, as well as assembly of their engines and customers may witness, as well as ask questions, take pictures as well as bring one guest to the procedure..

Peace,
Jay

I think the point of the thread is information ,A lot of people may not realise there is a formula to successful engine building . A lot of people try to do it on the cheap and cut corners.Im not in the business any more ,but the number of people who would ask ,cant we just reuse this and that ,Do my injectors really need cleaning etc etc .ahhhh the good old days, man i have some stories .

Jeff Carlson,
Purely for information young man ! IMO information on any open forum is to absorb or reject that being the call of the reader !

racerx If I find nothing wrong ( bore plating bad and crank health is good ) base price is $3200.00 ish all are base prices if the injectors come up at the minimum..

DING DING DING, you win!

Cool info Jay. Is this standard procedure for an engine that was still "alive" and just tired or one that lost it's lunch?

Would you be able to run 87 octane with this work? :D

I like to catch one thats still serviveable but tired and can get by with a hone , new rings, fresh TDR reeds, Brucato services, new bearings seals and o rings and send her on her way... When people have the "I think she'll live just one more season attitude" is where the prices start to take the BIG jumps like $750.00 for a re plate job added to the bill. And when one pukes it can get real pricey. No one ever wants to pull a running motor and be out $3000.00 + but the alturnative can get put in in a panic attack mode and the worse part is time off the water waitng for it to be bubble gummed back together after a KA POW..

Jay

Thanks for the insight, Jay. It goes the same way with all the Cat stuff. It's either rebuild while running yet tired or run to destruction.

Hey Jay, great post! I just had a set of 280 pistons top pinned and cut by US1 and Ruck did my block, Brucato did the injectors so I think I'm going in the right direction on my 260 rebuild. Now I just need the small stuff. Shoot me a PM with a package price on gaskets, rod bearings, and reeds. Thanks!

When I go to my local Merc dealer they look at me funny when I tell them I have a 2.5 EFI so I'm sure I won't get the right parts from them! LOL!
