Hello,

Can anyone help me? I have an 85 V-King with Mercury V-6 150hp that I picked up recently. I took it out for a test run and have some issues.

The first issue I noticed while going slow, the trim won't stay up, motor is good but seems like the cylinder has bad seals. The motor will trim it all the way up quickly but as soon as I put any load on it at slow speeds the motor pushes itself back into the transom to full down tilt. It seems to operate ok at on-plane speeds unless I just don't notice it, I can trim it till I get a rooster tail and it seems to stay. What kind of fix am I looking at for replacing the trim unit? It is a full external setup. Does the motor need to come off the boat? Is it a rebuild, or a replacement for those seals?

The second issue is the same problem my dad had on a checkmate with a 300 Merc. Wit full down tilt and while giving full throttle, the nose comes up but the motor bogs and won't put the boat on plane. When the nose finally starts to fall after 20 seconds, the prop cavitates or looses water and rpms spike.

I am not sure what prop pitch is on it right now, checking momentarily, but I did notice that the center of the prop shaft is about 4-5 inches below the pad, very low from what recommendations I have heard, but my guess is that would make getting the boat on plane easier.

Last thing, motor seems to run hot. I get teh buzzer occasionally and have to turn the motor off. I have a good stream of water exiting the back of the motor but it is hot steaming water, too hot to hold your hand in. Motor seems to load up after running at slow speeds too long too. Then it wants to stall.

Any input would be a great help, I am home on leave for another 2 weeks and wanted to get it running well for the weekend.

Best advice I can give right now, is to post a few pics of the rear of the boat, so we can see what's there. Too many questions to ask, and we might forget to ask something critical.

Opening this thread again after some time. Previous issues fixed, now have, what I bought off of here thinking is a 200 Merc powerhead to replace my 150 hoping for a little more power and to see if the thing even runs. ? I can't find any way to tell what motor I am dealing with since the powerhead came without the mid and transom mount that I understand has the serial tag.

Anybody know how to tell differences in powerheads? These are mid 80s V6s. Teh 150 runs strong, If what i think is a 200 runs good, the 150 will be for sale.

Thanks

Some esteemed members helped me with this last year - look on top of the block for a freeze plug with a stamped number on it (you may need to scrap some paint and grease off to read it). This should be the serial number - may start with B or C but when you look it up it may start with an "O" I think this was for Oil injection models.

Thanks, will check it.

I found it, the serial number reads: 6158264. I am researching but can't find anything. All of the charts I find tell me a range of serial numbers per year for each size motor. it could fall into any one of those ranges for size motor. So, I don't have any indication if it is a 200, 175 or 150.

Glad you could confirm the motor before swapping it. How did you resolve the leakdown on the trim unit - I have that issue and have not looked into the costs to repair.

This is the link I use to lookup - 1982 V-200 is correct

Any info on fixing that trim issue?

Eh, too late, I have the 200 about to hang, if it runs well, I will have a strong 150 power head for sale and a bunch of misc parts. A lower with a nose cone with a mid. pretty much a complete 150 Merc with a manual jack plate.

I replaced the Trim unit, found a good deal on a used one. EBAY. Inland lakes in Michigan are weedy, the nose-cone low pickup was sucking weeds, plus a new thermostat and impeller probably helped.

New setup will be that 200, with a 4 hole CLE and Flats Jack on a V-King.251104
