I'm looking to put a 300 hp + out board on a project boat I have and I'd like to find out what the lightest motor would be.
I saw a post on a 1977 Merc 300 hp V-6
I know the 300 V-8 John/ruide is good but I think they are a bit heavy.
Any suggestions ??

Depends on your application, but 2.5 280/260 will give you most HP for lightest weight. 20"= 400lbs 15"= 375lbs You can surely get these over 300 HP if you truly desire and want to spend $$.

Thanks , the boat I'm putting it on is a Starcraft ~nick named the Wedge~ it looks like a surf board and has no ~ hp rating~ from factory and I rebuilt the transom 4 times as strong as what I took out . It has a nice pad on it so I know I can get some good speed out of her ( I have 70 hrs in the over haul so far and will post pics after the ~ face lift is done~:reddevil:
What is a good 300 hp motor if building on a budget ?

if your boat is heavy you should get a motor with large displacement like the omc v8's. the new 300 xs mercury has a lot of torque and would be a good option. the 2.5 liter mercs make a lot of horsepower, but they are generally used on lighter hulls like allison, hydrostream, mirage, stv, and similar boats. the old omc's are relatively cheap. the hp 2.5 mercs are more expensive and have shorter rebuild intervals. the xs mercs are new technology and priced accordingly. let your pocketbook be your guide.

Thanks, the boat is a low profile, and is heavy ( built like the mid 80's Centurian Jet boat ) dual saddle tank seats 5 long deck:cheers: I know with the pad it has I can get mid 80+ mph out it.:reddevil::thumbsup:

Starcraft Wedge? I don't think so. That's a Daycruiser. The Wedge was decribed to me once as a reverse Trimaran. It was an air 'entrapment' design that Art Carlson did for Starcraft. Yours looks like a V-bottom of some sort. No need to fret though. Really neat boat. Really reminds me of the late 70's, early 80's. Good luck with the rebuild. Please post more pictures, if you can.

Thanks for the info..... I will get to her this winter I'm working on a 1968 GW Invader tunnel I bought and taking restore pics of that one too ~ this Starcraft is a 1979 Can-Am~ and it has a rounded pad I should get 80+ with a 300 hp motor on her:cheers:
