My brother has a 15 foot v-mate copy that looks exactly the same as that boat. About 15 years ago he used to run a crossflow v6 with a little work done to it and a 16 inch mid he built for it . It ran solid mid 80's and for reasons I still don't understand was one of the easiest boats to drive at top speed. It has about a 6 inch wide pad. Boat ran best with a 28 yamaha drag, choppers had too much bow lift.

The 15' Checkmate weighed 495lbs from the factory with the full interior. I had a 1972 model with an inline 150 Merc that ran in the low 70's until I blew it over. This thread shows pics of Benji's V6 Checkmate.

He aint gonna need no paid up life insurance and don't go ordering him a coffin yet. If this thing runs and handles like Dad's he'll be running straight as an arrow and thinking about eatin a sammich to. I can't explain it totally but these things love horsepower. Dad's clicked off the timers last year at SITC (1000' track) at 8.55 with 40lbs. of extra weight in it. Straight as an arrow every pass. Shandon is setting this one up identical, only difference is a little more weight on the tale end but it should not make a real big difference.

Isnt that what lawn chair Joe from over on lake tarpon use to have, and he drove it with a lawn chair?

joes favorite little boat was a 15 ft baja, he made a wood bench seat for it, joe is oldschool foresure.he had many ,2 or 3 16s, but liked the 15 best.back in the day it was common to run big motor on a small boat, when the black max came out in 76, we had a bud running a 14 baja with a 175, watching him holeshot & hearing the first v 6 would make your blood boil! at that time joe had a royalcraft with a 135 omc that ran very well for its day.

oldschoolltv
05-08-2010, 10:35 AM
Thats right it was the Baja that I saw him run a few times, was a real sleeper, I bet he surprised many boats with it, Matt

Dave Strong
05-08-2010, 11:54 AM
I love reading this suff, sleeper's Rock. Always called our 88 BAJA a sleeper, pinkish 18.6 Family openbow that runs low 70's. People up here have no idea what fast really is. They think my 19 Cougar tunnel is crazy at low 100's. Tell them that if I was to go to the lower States with it it would be a slug compared to alot the stuff down south.
Can just see the expressions on there faces to see a 280+hp on a older 15-16' BAJA, Checkmate, Lazer etc.:eek:
It is strange how a poorly setup or driven boat seems to look faster than one 10 or more mph faster that is running stabil and smooth.

think I need seat time and set-up, all negative trim, brutal out of the hole, only about half throttle. oh I was only turning around 6k, never ran it wot, ran 79mph,

Hydrofoil would help. My boat has too much weight in the back and came up like that. Doel Fin, although ugly and cheap looking, really made a difference. Even helps just motoring around at no wake speed.

trim that motor DOWN!! man your way tooo positive of trim for launch. I dont know if your just not all the way down or your just want to show off doing bouncing wheelies.

I have no where the power to weight ratio but have similar problem. I tuck way in on launch and as soon as the boat gets out I ride the trim button and the rpms/mph climb quickly for a fast controllable launch.

And tell the camera man to set down the beer and hold onto the camera with two hands

Nice boat!

Dave Strong
05-17-2010, 08:43 AM
Its hard to tell how trimed in the motor is the Alien covers give the illusion the motor is trimed out when they are not. JMO

Going to take some playing to get it right, got a prop with more tail lift less bow lift to try?

DANG! Watching it chinewalk once it starts to settle down after the moon launch and the porpoising reminds me of my Viper. Still tryin to get the skid marks out of my undies. And it wasn't HALF as wild a motor as yours. After my ex-boat racer local mechanic drove it he told me not to line it up against anything in the same lake....It was fun for a while but I put trim tabs on it and it settled down. Wish I had tried the wedges and a Doel-Fin.

M.CHAPMAN
05-17-2010, 02:57 PM
That should be close, these little things are sensitive to weight distribution and prop height and degree of trim, Once you nail that combination they run like hell with some big HP on the tale. Shandon is getting close. Won't be long and he'll be able to drive it with one hand runnin wide open.

-Michael

Mr. Demeanor
05-17-2010, 04:25 PM
My little boat (smaller than yours but less power) was a nightmare to drive until I got the setup right. Now its too easy. Keep at it. The smallest movemenst in weight make a huge difference for me. Just moving the seta back and forth changes the boat a lot.
The difference props makes is almost unbelievable. Just work on getting it settled then the speed will come. I almost sold mine when I first drove it and it only went 62mph with the exact same power. It was so hard to drive I would have never imagined going faster. Now I easily drive it with one hand and no foot throttle at over 80mph.

I may start a microboat thread for us LOA challenged boaters :)
