I have a checkmate and the clearcoat is plealing off. Can I get it recleared or do I need a new paint job. If I can get it recleared how much should this cost, ballpark? It a 20' enchanter

If you take a rag with somthing on it that will take a second to evaporate kinda like mineral spirits and wipe over it you will see what it will look like recleared .. We have recleared a few boats with peeling clear but still you best bet is to sand and paint !! If the clear is peeling now and you reclear it the clear under the fresh will and still can peel off bringing off the new clear as well !!
you cant just cleacoat over aged fiberglass, it will peel and just as important you will not retain gloss.
We did a Checkmate last year and we primed the boat first and it has been holding up great, but the small platforms I thought we could get away with just clearcoating them- they are looking dull.
A good surface not only holds paint, but it also retains gloss.

When one goes to re-paint a boat- is there a "special" paint or addative needed to paint over glass/ gel coat? My clear is also peeling ( over a so so paint job ) so I was wanting to sand, prime and paint myself- but also needed to know if I should EVEN attempt this at home- or if special tools, skills would be needed? I have painted smaller speed boats ( cheaply) in the past- but they were small enough to flip over by yourself in the garage! LOL! Just don't want to bite off more than I can SAFELY chew!
