What do people do for ventilation with after market Alien cowls? My understanding is the Merc cowls have a louver system that delivers air from the holes at the top back of the cowl to the front of the cowl.
After market cowls obviously don't have this louver system how are people getting air circulation or is it needed? I would appreciate any information from anyone who has dealt with this issue.
Thanks,
Bob

I make cowls. At this time I'm not putting the diverter in BUT I am working on molds to make these parts. They will only be avaible for sale installed in my cowlings.

I drilled holes in mine. I have had them on 3 EFI motors and never had any problems. This is the best pics of one I have here, I have seen a couple drilled out in the front behind the face plate.
Good Luck Jerry

I have an aftermarket cowl and the front cap for the cowl came with spacers. The spacers consist of longer screws with washers/locking nuts, and rubber tubing. The main cowl has a circular shape cut-out that is about 5 inches in diameter. I assume it is designed for a horn motor, but seems to work great with my carb motor. Here's a pic or two.

Cool thanks guys that is what I suspected. My aftermarket didn't come with the plate for the front so I will be looking for one of those....does it ever end.:D:eek:

i drilled some more holes in the top sides and also a bunch of small ones under the lip of the front piece that Josh posted. I have a bobs without the removable front also and the holes under that spot along with the larger ones on the sides made a very very noticable inprovement in performance. Big time accually!! The Aftermarket ones restrict air a lot over the stock merc cowls. Also the Merc ones are designed to move the air to the front unlike the Bobs. I think the holes I drilled in the front made the biggest differance. You have to go slow when drilling. The edges will fray otherwise. Just file the edges smooth when done. Get some black touch up paint and recolor the edges. I cant seen to find a pic with the smaller front hole. But I think you get the picture. Ill dig one up or take another one. http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h151/whipperr/pics2181-1.jpg?t=1271379937

Whipper what size holes did you drill in the front and do you have any problems with dirt or anything getting in there?

Call Noah at Eagle One I would bet he has a face plate ready to go. As far as dirt I always cover my Airhorn or carbs when going down the road and I stay off dusty lakes(LOL)
