Hi, Bought a truck today that does not have a gps. My last car had a built in one and I "forgot" how to use a Hagstrom. I buy my boat gps's from the gps store in North Carolina and Standard Horizon stands behind their products better than any company I ever dealt with, but they don't make for cars. They have the Garmin Nuvi 205 for $99 bucks. Are they any good or what do you suggest. I never really leave Long Island. Thanks

Also, does anyone know if they can be installed in the dash somewhere? It has a big ashtray that maybe it can be installed over??

I have a Nuvi widescreen (like a 250 or 260?? Forget which), and it has yet to lead me astray....works very well, good interface, and easily updateable (but you do pay for updates)....

Mike all the Nuvi are nice. I would suggest getting the models that have bluetooth if you talk on the phone while driving.

Garmin is the best. Make sure you get the "W" [widescreen]. You can buy in-dash retrofits [GPS/Video/Audio] but they can be $3-4K. I love the NAVI in my Wife's Honda.

I have a Nuuvi 215 which is just a step up from the 205. It does everything you will ever need as will the 205. Best $100 you'll ever spend. If it can navigate me around Pittsburgh it can get you anywhere. That city is a MAZE!
Mike- my Garmin GPS works practically anywhere in the car so im sure it will work in your ashtray. I actually just sit it there and dont want it mounted, last thing I need is some crackhead causing a couple thousand dollars worth of damage for a $200 GPS
I buy them from a good source if you want to stop by and check the price.

rob sounds good, might want one,ill try to remeber to ask you when im down there
its not ebay prices but they come from a very good source and they ship insanely fast, we ordered 2 of them on a Friday afternoon and Fed Ex showed up with them the next day, only paid for ground shipping
Whatever it costs me you can have it for the same price, I can check it right online by logging in when you get here, just looking to keep my numbers up with them so they keep my account active.

I've had real good luck with the Gramin's ....

I have had a Magellan maestro for 4 years , but I was having trouble in day light viewing , so I did a search two weeks ago and got a NuvI 780 for $160 at Amazon , was a $400 unit . I like mine mounted at the bottom of the windshield so I don't take my eyes off the road , GREAT unit many times better than the Magellan. Great deals on line now.
once they come out with a new model they deeply discount the old ones
Here is another good tip= the charger for the Garmin works in blackberrys and other devices that use the same style plug, such as the Go-Cameras as well.
The USB cable you get with the blackberry can be used with the garmin to make your software updates.
I just updated mine the other day, it had updates for things like better pronunciation of street names and things like that, you can also load custom voices and different vehicles- all free. BUT map updates are $69- aint needed in these parts and Im not paying $69 to update the map.
