Hows it going guys I'm new here and have some questions about Action boats. My neighbor has one he was trying to sell last year and it never sold, They are summer residents so I'm going to attempt to buy it from him when they come down this spring. Its similar in shape to the Actions I see on here but its slightly different in shape in the transom area, It says "Action 21" on the side of it and is on a trailer that's in great shape. The motors a 79 mercury 200hp which looks to be in good shape and the props a stainless one also in good shape. My questions for you guys are A: can some one tell me what year this thing is if I get you a HIN B: what areas can go south on these that I should look at? and C: If its in fair working order what should I offer him for it.

thanks
Bryan

Looks like a Super Boat 21' or a Rally Sport 21'.

Action Marine of Hollywood, FL made a 18', 19', & 20'. They later built a 23' & 25" CC & a few 28's.

The big question is how do they ride? and what should I offer him ?

Action Dave
03-22-2010, 09:33 AM
Wow. I've never seen an Action that looks like that. That might be pre-Action Dave. (1979). If the HIN is ACM it was built by Barney though. They did make a 21 center console in the 80's but I've never seen a closed deck model like that. I would check the usual stress points. Transom, floor, bottom. More than likely if the boat is as old as I'm assuming, and it's never been re-done, you've got some work to do with it. I'm interested to see what Mr. Action has to tell us about this boat.

KIND of rounded bottom, no pad, shallow dead rise and not many lifting strakes like the newer styles..ie superboat, velocity , but does have nice lines and long deck, should ride fine with that power, love those NASTALGIC boats...if YOU like it NEGOCIATE !!!:iagree:

he had it on CL for $1500 my brother in law almost bought it for the motor. Idk how much work its going to need the damn thing musta been garaged because its extremely clean the transom seemed ok but I'm not to sure how to check it?

for that price you should be all over it, it looks pretty good from the pic, covered up and all, don't know about the motor, but the boat and trailer should be worth that...good luck:smiletest:

Seems like a good price even if it needs a little work. According to Barney, that boat should be a 1983-84. Rare boat but still pretty cool looking.

Barney(Sr.) made that briefly from the old Scorpion 20/21 hull mold. It was originally designed & tooled by SeaBird back in the early 70's. OMC used a royal blue gelcoat SeaBird 20 in their sterndrive literature(fullpage) jumping a wake, coming completely out of the water, showing off the entire clubfoot outdrive, about 1972.

HEY MAN !!! it's an ACTION MARINE not a hydrostream, chances are it's in great shape...real glass not balsa core, probably 3/8 in thick, ACTION MARINE wouldn't build a boat that won't go 60+ JUMP ON IT !!!:smiletest:

Hey how safe would you say this thing will be I see lots of talk to boats "blowing" over at high speeds and such, this should be a decent fast but not all out drag boat right?

Might not be the fastest down here Dave, but considering where he is at, I would say that would have most of the bayliners and such covered just fine. :D

It probaby has a wood in the transom, floor, seatbox, etc. Only the newer boats are made wood-free. No reason to worry. Get a rubber mallet and tap stresspoints on the boat. Usually the transom is the first to show wood rot. Or soft spots on the floor. If you hear a dead "thud" with the mallet, the wood is soft.

Bryrylan
03-29-2010, 04:04 PM
Ok will do I jumped around on the floor and it seemed solid its always covered so I'm hoping that helps. I will check the transom soon, the motor was up and I tried bouncing the motor up and down and it did not seem to flex or anything so.

RussF
03-29-2010, 04:29 PM
what lake is that boat on now

Bryrylan

I'm not sure where he runs it. Why I'm so concerned about the transom is because the aluminum cap on top of it is lose and I'm not sure how much water has gone down into it.

RussF

Huh???

RussF
03-29-2010, 08:05 PM
if the boat is how old and outside, even with a cover on water gets in, if the top of the transom is crascked water gets inthe transom

Bryrylan
03-29-2010, 08:08 PM
Yeah.... Thats what I'm thinking but I think if I get it for the right price it shouldn't matter.

yep.

I buy a boat expecting it to be rotten (and pricing it like it is) Usually I am not disappointed, but my latest project ended up being solid as a rock structurally.

Bryrylan
03-29-2010, 08:29 PM
well I see trailers going for 800 like its sitting on and I know if that motors runs its worth 800 bucks around here so if I get it for a 1000 worst case I can split it up and sell my way out of it. The last project I had was a race quad that was "mint", well cracked frame, JB welded head studs, hacked wiring, I learned my lesson about buying toys.

Bryrylan
03-30-2010, 05:56 PM
Ok so tonight I got to pull the carpet back and really look at the floor. It needs a floor.... so that prob means It needs stringers and such to? I know alittle about fiberglass and I'm handy but is this somthing I should walkaway from? I did a search on here and see tons of boats split in half to be repaired and such I don't want that... If I can gut the floor and go from there thats fine but I'm all set with separating a hull. the floor looks like its all glass on top of ply wood. the woods shot and it looks like theres foam under the ply wood. you think the stringers are junk?

magnum2.5
03-30-2010, 06:42 PM
usually the stringers are layed up at the time the hull is made...the floor is put in after and most used plywood, but, only laminated the top of the plywood, the bottom was exposed to water and humidity and over time soaked up mosture and gets soft, it takes awhile lets face it the boat is 30 yrs old...if you remove the plywood you might find the stringers to be in great shape, puttin in a floor in older boats is often a given, if the transom is bad this means more extensive work, but if you are going to make a cruiser out of it with-out having a high jackplated motor on it , it may be fine with just minor repair...if you LIKE the boat and get it cheap enough, not a big deal to bring it back....my sugestion would have somebody experienced in inspection take a good look at it and make a judgement call, it didn't look that bad from the photos but up close tells all, jump on the back of the motor and see if the transom flecks, look for cracks around the engine well, it should be obivous if its really SHOT:)

Bryrylan
03-30-2010, 06:52 PM
First thanks for all the reply's I know I'm being a pain in the ass with this but like i said in my past post I got screwed bad on a Race quad and then lost my shirt when I sold it so. Yeah my 200+# brother in law was pushing down hard on the motor tonight and it was not flexing at all (the jack wheel of the trailer was coming off the ground) I really like it alot and think we can handle a floor replacement I think the front of the floors good because the bows enclosed, the carpets in good shape that's over the floor now so it would be a remove and power wash that and reinstall it. There was like two 3" holes cut out under where the back seat would be thats how I know the plys junk and there's foam under it. Would it be best to rip all the foam out and just re plywood it with marine ply and fiberglass on top of it/around it to keep it in place?

magnum2.5
03-30-2010, 07:04 PM
it't probabley not that bad...if the foam is WET you will have to chase it down and remove it cause it hold water and weight, the carpet will hide most amature repairs, easy fix, summer is just around the corner so GET-ER-DONE....

Bryrylan
03-30-2010, 07:07 PM
well I will keep ya posted the guy should be here Thursday and I'm going to ask him If its still for sale and if I can bring it to my shop and throw a battery in it see if it runs and all that jazz.

1BadAction
03-30-2010, 07:14 PM
even if the foam is wet, the stringers might not be. Just depends on if the stringers were penetrated in the rear (like screwing a bilge pump to them and not sealing) if they were compromised, the ply will soak that water all the way through. In the front of my action where the glass was sealed, the stringer was rock solid, even though the foam around it was soaked and the floor was mulch.
