View Full Version : Aftermarket Lower Units
I see them on E-Bay and other sites for about $900 and someone told me you can't bet their 1.5-2 yr warrenty. They have them for outboards and I/Os. I would think that they would not hold up near as well to high rpms?
Anyway I'm thinking of putting one on a motor I'm selling, anyone use them?

look up SEI , you can but them direct. I have put a couple on fishing boats and they seem to hold up but I haven't tried to run one surfaced.

I believe that Eagle One stocks and sells them also. Always nice to give our Supporting Vendors a shot.;)
Thanks, I know I need one for my 275 Mercs so I'll look into it as soon as my machinic does a compression check on the motor.

Your not going to find an aftermarket lower for the old washing machines.
Your not going to find an aftermarket lower for the old washing machines.
Yea I was thinking that too, I guess they don't match up with the other V6s also?
I checked Eagle 1 but it looks like they only put low water pick-ups on the LUs. Anyway they seem to have a real nice web page and I'll keep them in mind for other stuff!
Oh, I've got the lower for the 275, gears are apart and in a box, what it needs I don't know yet but 1st option will probably be a rebuild as the case looks like new. I would think if I can find an aftermarket or used one it would be about the same costs of rebuilding mine though?

3 year no fault warranty. Why would you think they would not hold up? They sell them for this price because they don't have 9 layers of distribution to pay as they go thru each tool booth. Not because they are cheaply made. Mercury will not honor a waranty when you take a new standard lower and put a low water kit on it. If you don't modify the lower unit it is covered. 1 year for Merc (maybe) 3 years no fault for SDI. Hell for $900 you can't have a Merc lower unit rebuilt properly. There's just nothing not to like. Look around and ask and you can buy one for less than the MSRP.
I see Wildman has a motor of his for sale with a SDI lower. If it's good enough for him and Eagle One....

is it made here or in china
Thanks Eagle, I'll be in touch. I know from working in a test lab, testing plastics, that over the last 10-15 yrs materials have gotten about 300% stronger thru newer techs. I'm sure the matals field has seen great advances also, in cheaper prices mfg., and strenght! Hell just watch "How It's Made" to see how and why things are better and cheaper!

I think they are put together in St.Pete or Clearwater FL. I don't know where the guts are made. My Merc dealer has used them with great success on bowriders (Alpha's) and fishin engines. I was looking into replacing the lower on my 3.0L. Not sure if they are the same as the late models. I wonder if they have the lower water pick-up holes on the bullet? And if someone could help answer, how are the parts for repair? Are they Merc parts or are they solely avail. thru the aftermarket manufacturer?

I and several other dealers we install low water pick-ups for have sold well over a hundred without any problems. Mercs, Yamaha's 2.5's, 3.0's all seem to be a well made piece. I think the parts are foreign, might be from GLS here in the states for all that matters but they are assembled in S Florida as I understand it. Every piece will interchange with a Merc. unit...

Now let's ask where the Merc parts are made and assembled.

I have one on my 3 liter, 250EFI pushing a 24 foot boat, most of the time at or near WOT, they do not make the low water pickup one though(I asked when I bought mine), from everything I have read and experieced so far, they hold up well. Assembled in Sarasota area, with parts from who knows where, but who cares with a 3 year unconditional warranty. They come packaged extremely well, and have an online forum that the tech. department actually answers if you have any questions. Unfortunately though, they do not make one for your motor. I have a friend that is a mercury dealer, and his cost on the mercury replacement lower was almost 3x what this thing costs, with 1/3 the warranty. i paid $795, plus $50 shipping for mine, and sold my blown up one on Ebay for $400(of course I told them it was blown), so for a little over $400, I got a NEW unit with 3 years warranty, how can you go wrong??

I bought one for a OMC V-4 big block. Seems to be doing OK, all foreign made parts so who knows. The casting and finish on the case was horrible. OK for a boat pulling a shrimp net but not even good enough for pleasure use. If they had spent a little time and made and finished a good casting then I would try and sell more.
Every time I see one all I can think of is Harbor Freight hand tools!

They make 3 liter lowers with low water pick ups. It costs
100 dollars more. My friend got one about 2 weeks ago. All the
ones I have seen from sterndrive looked great no casting marks
or anything like that

I know of one that has been abused for about a year with no issues. It turns over 9k every time out and has been subjected to hp well above stock.

I flat abuse mine! I mean I bounce off stumps, drag bottom,&run in silt. There is not a thing wrong w/ them. Paint could probably used a little better prep job but for the 820 bucks I will buy a cpl cans of good black paint and touch it up as needed. I as well had no casting marks.
