gear ratio change

To change my lower unit from 2:1 gear ratio as it is now to a 1.87:1 would I be able to lust replace the forward gear ? Or would I need to replace the set(forward,rev,pinion)?

i heard of these drag racers that just change the pinion but i have never done it:nonod: i always change the set out even though forward and reverse have 28 teeth each gear they have different part numbers so im thinking something must be different but it may not be . if you take out gears they must be set up right or they wont last anytime forward gear lash and pinion are crucial for longevity. just my.02:cheers:

yes 2.1 has 14 teeth and 1.87 has 15
