Who makes it? Or made it? When i say efficient, i mean, the most hydrodynamically efficient for a performance padded v hull and also being strong enough to take a beating and can be jacked up to the moon.
The old chrysler high performance gear case (like the one on ron bakers record setting viper) was cool because he said you could just keep jacking it up and it never lost pressure.
Are their any better by now? I would think so. Also, since one of them must stand out above the rest, how many people adapt these better units to the incorrect mid to make it work?
Curious on the 3 cyl omc, v-4 omc, and all the 6 cylinder stuff.
Thanks

The most efficient gear case is the smallest unless it is not as smooth as another slightly larger case.
That would mean the Merc SSM VI is the top dog ... cases smaller than the VI will not take the same beating

Depending on the amount of HP and abuse of course the choices will be different... A fat shaft Sportmaster with a cone added and some skeg work will be very durable with great speed potential... A coned 200 case with a heavy duty bearing carrier is a wonderful case that can hold a good bit of power on light boats and has pretty impressive mph potential... An XR6 case with heavy duty internals and a cone can approach the speed of light, but the strength of the case itself and cost of the unit would make it a competition only piece for high power engines or recreational usage with moderate to medium V6 power on light boats... I run the river @ 1500 lbs. and about 275-300hp when it's not broken, and I use a Sportmaster although I really like the idea of a 200 coned case with a HD bearing carrier as My preferred worry free sandbar unit...

what about the ultimate gear case for only 3 or 4 cyliner power (or old inline 6 power).

The smallest that will bolt up ... right hand Super Speedmaster for Mercs and the OMC racing lower unit for their triples

I agree with Ted , on a V-6 Mercury Its tuff to beat a 200 gear case with a Bob's nose cone and good guts and Hi per carrier in the housing..

Like the X115 case.... Small, good gear ratio. And Cheep. Best the Club Foot. These cases have good gear ratios to front area. The Merc Speedys are 1 to 1 with smaller fronts..... but can't give bow lift in a V. Depends on ya dreams.

Darus told me once while at the plant that the CLE was the fastest shiftable gearcase.
