Hello all, this is my first post and I was hoping someone might be able to help me. I apologize if this question is easily solved by the right search, but after my best attempt I cannot find the same engine. I have what I can best describe as a Johnson 10 HP outboard with a racing lower unit. At one point I had it identified based on serial number, but all I remember is it was a 1988 OMC. I had it on a replica 10' race boat I built, and the only term I've heard associated with the motor is a racing lower unit. Below I included a Youtube link (sorry again if this is against any rules, I assure you it's not anything malicious), this is the closest picture I could find to what the top cover look like (however that one is a 15 hp). I will not be able to take any pictures for a couple months until the ice on the lake where it's stored has thawed, but I was hoping someone might be able to at least help me figure out what the proper term for this racing lower unit is. I think the time has come to sell it, and I eventually hope to figure out it's value. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

This is the 1988 JOHNSON 15A Race Motor on the right. Is this the motor?

Thank you for your response. That look's like the engine in the youtube video I posted, however I have the 10 HP model. I will check out your webshots to try and find it, but if you happen to have the specific picture in mind I'd appreciate the link. Looks like you have quite a bit of information to sort through. Thanks!

After looking at the picture you posted more closely I noticed the APAB Class A decal, which I'm pretty positive mine also has.

OMC created this 15hp race engine in 1987. Has a high performance gearcase & are very quick on the right boat. There are still many of them out there racing & I am sure fishing as well.

Here is the brochure of the 1988 models:- http://rides.webshots.com/album/569372362odWdiR?vhost=rides

Specifications are on Page 47.

Close, but not quite it. I'll check some other years catalogs to see if I remembered wrong. Perhaps the wrong cowling was put on at some point. Thanks for your response, I know I didn't provide much information so I may not know until I can look at it again in person.

Speedliner that is it, there is no other OMC unit like it in modern times.

If you have a very similar unit that is not exactly the same, it is a Hot Rod, not an OMC.

Could you please clarify what you mean by hot rod? I'm positive it says APBA Class A on the lower unit, and Johnson 10 on the cowl. Is Hot Rod another manufacturer? Is it possible that the engine is a 10HP that has a 15HP lower unit on it. Thanks again for your responses, and if my information isn't enough it should only be a couple months until I can check out the Model number in person.

It seems to me that the motor cover may not be original & may have been exchanged for another with a 9.9 or 10hp logo. The only way to tell is by the model number.

Speed, Sam and Ken are correct. You got 15 most likely with the wrong cover on it.

Ken,

Do you have an example of the Evinrude 45SS side profile like the one above? Looking to make repro's of the APBA 45SS and pin stripes for my 45. I need a clear shot to get the dimensions.

Thanks,

Steve.

I agree, just a cowl swap, its a 15A/15ss

The cowl latch is not perfect when they have a couple years on them and a lot of racers loose them underway ... and ... they are sinkers

Hot Rod is another manufacturer and was the originator of that particular racing lower unit. OMC adapted it with permission & help from the Hot Rod guys.

Replacement parts are available from Racing Outboards Inc who currently make the "Sidewinder" version of the Hot Rod motor & lower unit.
