I am trying to remove my tilt-trim assembly, and successfully removed the two mounting brackets and tilt tube. The motor is hung on an engine hoist and I am trying to remove the remaining tilt assembly. The bottom two nuts came off without a hitch, although they were corroded a bit.

However, the top two bolts that go through the steering arm mounting to the block are spinning without backing out. Looking in my manual for the motor, it looks like the top two bolts are through the swivel pin/steering arm, and this a a "Design 2" style of mount. There appears to be two lock nuts on those bolts, inside somewhere that I don't see.

Is there a way to remove these somehow without pulling the whole lower unit, midsection, and freeing the powerhead to get to those locknuts?

thanks

Maybe I dont understand what you are trying to do,first what motor are you workin on.Lets assume:rolleyes:its a merc why are you removing the motor mount bolts, all you neede to do was remove the 6 bolts that holdthe trim unit to the bracket on the side, two zinc bolts on the bottom, seperate the clamp bracket by loosen the tilt tube nut,now the fun part. The tilt pin has a alighnment pin that must be driven out.then tap out tilt pin and your done if its a merc three ram system,if its a single ram merc or other just let us know,as for the bolts turning (which is why I assumed it was a three ram style)the powerhead should come off now and retorqued:(

It's a 1988 135HP Merc/Mariner Marathon. Yes; it's the 3-ram system. I didn't realize removing th pins after removing the two mounting brackets, would separate the rams/motor mechanism from the transom mounting plate/steering shaft mount. The steering shaft/steering arm mounting bolts were the ones I couldn't loosen without removing the powerhead. The upper two bolts are only accessible in the exhaust/adapter plate, which would have meant removal of the powerhead to get at them.

Being VERY new at this, it sure was a learning experience and yes; I have the Mercury Manual. Thanks to Rude Runner, I now understand how to get the trim pump and motor removed WITHOUT taking the powerhead off to work on those steering shaft mount bolts.
