i have single ram trim, it is slow as heck w/ the metal can merc pump, so i changed it to the mercruiser pump(plastic reservoir), and its just as slow! apparently there is 2 or 3 different mercruiser trim pumps, the difference being is internally the actual pump is bigger. is there any way to distinguish the faster pump externally from the slower ones without dissassembly and measuring the pump?

Have you tried a bob's pump? Or put 24v to your slow pump.

What type of hyd fluid you have in the pump now?
Did you try a lightweight hyd fluid?
What about the condition and size AWG of wire you are using
Check & clean ground wire
Did you check your volts at the pump and on the engine?
How old is your pump?
Check the pdf for more info on the Parker 108 hyd pump
The 108 Series models are designed for intermittent
service and come in four standard pump sizes which
produce flows of .0098, .0187, .0246, and .0321 cubic
inches per revolution. Locking check valves are available
in all models. Performance will vary with the type
of fluid used. Several hydraulic circuits are available.

Charlie, from what I understand it's the valve body that varies, and when I had mine apart the pickup tubes were a longer length in the assembly from Mercruiser (faster pump). I made one good pump with a good motor from the metal can type and a valve body/resevoir from a Mercruiser type.
I've also heard there's a difference between the trim tab (k-plane) pump assembly and the drive pump (for a bravo) I can tell ya that my k-plane pumps on the Pantera are deathly slow compared to the drive or the one in the Allison.
Also, fluid type helps a bit, I've been running ATF forever. Plus, if you're gonna do any drag racing you gonna want to do 24V while your changing pumps around.

If you can find a mercuriser pump it should be twice the speed of your standard pump.

There are several different Mercruiser pumps. They're not all the same. The link I posted has the part number in it that your looking for. I think they're from big block bravo's but not sure
