Question: I have never really been a mercury guy, as we never had a dealer close by, but i am wondering after reading a little about the newer emission friendly v-6 being super heavy, what are people going to use for power once all the v-6's die out that only weigh 400 pounds? In other words, you won't want to put a 550 pound motor on a 17 foot hull weighing 500 pounds. Maybe it won't matter as much since everybody is building 20 foot and over boats now, but still, these new motors are heavy!

I have owned 4 300 X Mercs. One 300 pro max. I just bought a 2010 Evinrude 250 HO. I would never buy another Merc. The Evinrude burns 1/2 the fuel, they back it for 5 years, super quiet and shifts butter smooth. Yeah I lost 55 HP. Merc is dead to me. E-Tech is the way to go.

Joe & Ralph,
Y'all be some funny guys!!!
Hydroo,
You can't compare the old school Mercs to an E-tech on fuel economy. The Mercury Hi-Perf Opti's get better fuel economy and produce more speed power for power and hull for hull according to Bass and Walley test a while back.
Let us know how you feel about your new engine after a few months of use.
Good luck.

Sure the old Mercs are worse on gas, but you have still never tried an XS. The Optis and Etecs have the same direct injection technology. I guess as long as you're driving slow boats, the rpm and gearcases and gear ratio that the Mercs have does'nt matter! You should put a couple of those Etecs on your 32 Skater and see how well you like em! Give me a call Hugh, and let me know how that Etec runs. HeHeHe!

It would'nt matter if anything other than a Merc had 500hp. If they only turn 6000 rpm and have no low water pickup and don't have a 1.62 gear ratio, THEY AREN"T GONNA RUN WITH THE MERC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
