View Full Version : timing
I have heard by advancing the timing on a drag motor that it accelerates harder off the line. Does it have a negative effect on the other end? Or is their a sweet spot?

HI. I think the sweet spot is the factory setting. So many variables other- wise thanks.

Yes there is a sweet spot. Alot of timing will help bottom end but will start hurting you on the big end. I'd say around 25-27

I have had adjustable mechanical timing from the seat on my rig before , after I would start the motor at 25*( to keep from smoking the bendex and flywheel teeth with allot of timing and compression ) I would leave the line at 31* it left like a rocket and the farther down the 1/4 mile coarse I would retard the timing to 25-27* and it would keep that acceleration. For Shi** and giggles I advanced it to 31 * at 10,000 RPMS and it like to threw me threw the windshield.. ( LOST POWER ) If I was gonna choose a timing number that was motor friendly on a Drag motor on race gas I'd choose 27 * IMO that a very good all around number for drag racing...
From my experiances,
Jay
Thanks I will dial mine back down to 27 deg and give it a try.
