For sale: Nuclear missile launch pad

October 01, 2002

Their first Internet auction brought no bidders, so the owners of the so-called ''silo home'' - a former nuclear missile launch pad buried 180 feet underground near Plattsburgh - have dropped the price by 74 percent and will try again.

The new opening bid on eBay for a chunk of Cold War history: $550,000. ''We know that the right person or company is out there,'' explained Internet auctioneer Donald Peters, who will manage the hoped-for bids. ''We fully expect to sell it.''

The auction made headlines last month when its owners, Bruce Francisco and Gregory Gibbons of Connecticut, vowed to sell the silo on eBay by Sept. 25, pitching it as safe haven against terrorist attacks.

The property included a luxury chalet home above ground; a two-story launch control center remodeled as living space underground; and an air strip. The one thing it lacked: an opening bid of $2.1 million.

The new auction ends Oct. 25, and Francisco and Gibbons have sweetened the deal by adding 78 more acres and promising to build an 800-square-foot addition to the above-ground home.

The steel-and-concrete former Atlas-F nuclear missile silo was built between 1959 and 1961 by the U.S. Department of Defense for about $18 million. It was one of 12 underground silos in the northern Adirondacks that ringed the old Plattsburgh Air Force Base.

Gibbons purchased the site 15 years ago. He spent months pumping water from the silo, which hangs from giant suspension coils that were designed to withstand the shock of a direct nuclear hit.

He and Francisco say they're looking for a developer who can find a use for what they call ''the most unique and secure real estate in the world.''

''We know that this could be a very lucrative investment,'' Francisco said. ''We just need an angel to help us take it to the next level.''
