To tell you the truth, I don't think so. The only time I drove a single with that number was in Miami '69. Renato rigged the boat but hurt himself in Austin and Harold had me drive the boat, which I blew over about 20 or so laps after passing Scottie for the lead. I was in way over my head, as usual.
I think this is the boat I saw on another thread about Havasu and I ask who it belonged to but never got an answer. The #S-71 was Glastron's number when I went to work for them in '68. This may be Tinker Collen (sp) He was a big guy and as I remember he wore blue and drove some races out west for Glastron before we hired Gene Piehl. I was a skinny runt and wore white short sleeve shirts till we got the yellow uniforms in '69. They used this photo on several different magizines. On the '69 Havasu program the picture is on the front and on page three is the picture of Gene (single no #) and me (twin T-74) on lake travis. That was the Glastron ad.

Great photo.

I started stripping off some of the layers of paint from my 1968 18 footer and found it to be a yellow and black one. I hope to find a name or number at some point, it would be great to know who drove it . I was told this was a popular color combination on the early models? Is this true and if so how many might of been made.

At the 1969 Havasu Outboard World Championships, the only single Evinrude X-115's on 18' Glastron/Molinaris were # 30 Jimbo McConnell from Victoriaville, Cal. & # 511 Dick Sharp from Seattle Wash. Co-driver was Gerry Wallin of Edmonds, Wash. who set the Outboard Speed Record Of 131 mph in one of the Starflites which can be viewed if you check out Liquidnirvana-Webshots to watch mostly OMC's set the World Outboard Speed Records which stands at 186 mph by Bob Wartinger of Seattle, Wash. piloting an 18' Karlsen 3 point hydro & Evinrude V-8!

The OMC won!!!.....That cover shot is Havasu, 1968. It's a pair of Molinari's, not Glastron/Molinari's. The Merc is Carlo Rasini and the Evinrude is Cesare Scotti. Scotti finished second overall and first single. Rasini came in third overall and second single. Renato had blown over his twin, thus he didn't have a ride. He and Rasini were good friends and he became the co-driver in the S-71.

Evinrude X- 115's were white top half of motor cover, a real nice blue bottom 1/2 to skeg.
Jonson GT-115's were kind of a gold colour top 1/2, 'Johnson green' bottom's.

BTW my collection of Powerboat starts with January 1970, wish I had that one...that's a great cover shot.

htower, This was a boat that I bought this summer. It was suggested to me that it was a factory boat and the twin to it was painted Yellow with Black stripes. Maybe we're related.

Thanks for posting those old UU class boats. That is an era that is gone never to be seen again, unfortunetly.

Well Sam, even though there are no race boats in that magazine, I believe I would hang on to it!!

Sam- Cool Cover # 2 Motor Boating Mag. from Sept. 1944 looks like a PT boat. Remember PT-109 & your President. Fastest boat for its day. Depth charges, cannon, 50mm! Had dual major engines & V-drives I would guess. Very hard target to hit because of speed! With the right props, could haul the mail!

The "crash boats" that they used to pick up pilots that bailed out or crashed were faster than PT boats. They were similar but carried no armament of any type. Maybe PT boats were our fastest armed boats.

PT's carried different armament depending on the size of the boat and year and were powered by Packard V-12's ... 3 or 4 of them depending on the year and make of boat. Huckins still makes and uses the V-drives. Huckins only had a minor contract for PT's during the war and their boats were only used in non-combat locations even though they were clearly the fastest of all PT boats. Congressmen and other big wigs got safe rides in fast Huckins PT's at the PT boat school in Rhode Island, the Panama Canal Zone and Hawaii.


There is a story about boat racing in this issue ... and the story explains how they got around the normal prohibition on boat racing. The race was held as a fundraiser for war bonds. During World War II NOA and APBA were shut down, but a temporary sanctioning body was set up for rulemaking for the fundraiser boatrace events. Restrictions on gasoline for the races themselves would not have been a problem because almost all classes ran on alcohol ... but I bet there was a lot of car pooling for the spectators.


Right down the street (figuratively) from me here in Annapolis, the "Annapolis Yacht Yard" built Vosper PT's for England. The Sassafras Boat Company where I worked 30+ years ago built crash boats. After WWII there was a major dispute between Maryland and Virginia over oyster beds in the Potomac River and one of the Virginia bandits weaseled a captured German PT (I think the Reichsmarine's designation was "M") from the army at Aberdeen Proving Ground. The state of Maryland bought and finished out a nearly complete undelivered Vosper from the yard at Annapolis to chase the bandits. One of my friend's father served on the Vosper.

I heard them called Air Sea rescue boats. Miami ships on the Miami River built some. Troy Wollard, who built the first fiberglass boat in Florida worked there.
I saw one at Cracker Boy Marina (N Palm Beach) hauled out, and the running gear was elegant. The difference was that they had convex bottoms and the PT boats had concave bottoms.

Bob Derecktor, a boatbuilder in Mamaroneck NY drove a PT in WW II. He used a sheet of plywood on 4 jeep tires as a helm station to mitigate the pounding.
He told me that they removed every bit of surplus equipment they could, including the torpedo launchers to save weight. In an attack, they would roll them off the deck, reverse course following their track in retreat. Its amazing what young men with big S's on their chests will do.

When I lived in California in 66-67, I got to hang around with Ted Jones..He told me some stories of having to smuggle the V-12's to their shop..After the war the engines weren't really for sale, but if you managed to get one it was yours..Evidently he had someone on a military base who could procure one at times..They drove only at night from Arizona to his shop, on back roads..If you knew him, you also knew he was hard of hearing..He said that was a result of 12 exhaust pipes in front of him in the boats.. He was a very cool person...I was honored to be around him..:cheers:

Lou Brumett, owner of Mandella, won the Parker 9 Hour two years in a row in Rawhide. I'm pretty sure he drove the entire race (no co-driver) both times.....you have to be one tough ombre to do that in those boats! As we were leaving Parker on monday in 69, we drove past the race site and could hear the distinctive sound of a open exhaust V8 on the water. We pulled over and waited to see what was going on. Eventually we saw Rawhide coming down the river just like he had done for nine hours the previous day. We asked someone standing by his trailer why Brumett was out there running again. The guy said that Lou was going to run until the engine let go so they could find it's "weak" spot and then have Lou Unser's shop build a new engine with more horses for next years 9 hour!

As I recall Rawhide was either a clone or a rename of Miss Mandella. The hull actually was featured in the Elvis Presley movie, Clambake, wherein he was a boat racer in Miami with a "secret fibreglass formula" who beat the rich guy ( Eddies father)

as a youngster i used to read an american magazine called "SPEED-N-SPRAY" AND REMEMBER THE WONDERFUL TALE OF THESE 4 BOATRACERS WHO DECIDED TO BUILD A FORD ENGINED MANDELLA whilst they were drinking beer round a pot bellied stove, and enter it into the :ELSINORE 500 i remember 2 of them being Rudy Ramos and Lou Brummett but i.ll be damned if i can remember the other two They then did Parker and the rest is history. Wonder if anyone has a copy of that particular issue of SPEED_N_SPRAY.
