I use speedymetals.com when I just need a short length. Most of the industrial metal suppliers won't sell small quantities.

Tony's correct. Aluminum is sold by the lb..I bought a 2'X2' square piece only 1" thick and it weighed 80 lbs .. That was a few years ago and it was like $375.00 ( I used it to build my run stand base where the motor bolts..I can only wonder what a piece thick enough to build a pair of heads would cost...

Aluminum prices have been like a roller coaster in the last few years. It was at a high a couple of years ago and is about 30% less now. Steel prices are even more unstable.

Alum prices greatly depends on what Boeing is doing or building at the time and all there sub contractors.

I second Tony's recommendation of www.speedymetals.com (http://www.speedymetals.com) if you only need a short piece.

Extruded flat or bar will hold its shape better than plate when you start cutting on it. Also cheaper.
