I think Ive finally started to make some headway on getting a good used 28 cat. I wont talk much about it til its done because Ive cried wolf too many times on deals that fell through. But its at 28 and has no power.
I want to make sure I get warrantied new motors and need something 300 hp I would assume..
What are my options right now? Ive always just assumed Merc would be the way to go, but I know some of the other manufacturers are catching (or have caught) up with them on some of their models as far as top MPH is concerned..
What should I be looking at?

On a 28 Cat, Mercury. If it were a fishing type boat, I'd recomend Yamaha 4 strokes. Just my opinion.

I kinda assumed that might be the response I got, considering 99% of the boats Ive seen all were running Mercury.. Just thought maybe there might be a viable alternative:thumbsup:

Mercury 300XS Strokers. Only way to fly. The Yamaha VZ300 is a good motor but not in the same league with the Merc for overall top end peformance. The XS has a limiter at 6450 where the Yammie is 6200. The Merc Sportmaster blows away the Yamaha HPDI case. The Merc is also less expensive. The new Suzuki 250SS four stroke is supposed to be a killer motor but I'm not sure I would would power a 28ft Cat with them. I've read about the new 300 ETEC but again if it were my money I would go with the proven powerplant which is the Merc Stroker with sporty's.

Just shy of $16K new.
That's with no rigging or labor.

I have Merc's but would consider 300 Zuki's. I will wait a couple of yrs. for them to get all the bugs worked out. 300xs's now. They are showing up on the used market. The fuel economy is UNREAL!!!!!!! Just make sure your transom is solid. The 300xs are 500+ pounds and if you are looking at an older hull it probably wasn't designed to carry that much weight. But, that problem can be fixed also. Good luck and kept us posted on your purchase.

You won't get RH and LH offshores for that. Call me for a price. No sales tax either. 386-761-8050 or email liberatorboats@yahoo.com

I have seen quite a few used low hour 300XS's showing up lately. A pair sold on THT for about $9k each and they had something silly like 78 hours.
