i friend gave me a cle case with the bobs nose cone on it and the carrier nut stripped out (he has a skater) the thread are still there but wont hold

i was wondering instead of throwing the case out ,can the carrier nut be welded in place (im sure it can be welded) but has anyone ever done this and did it hold up?????????

I have found several that would not hold torque until I changed out the nut. It's not always the case that takes a crap. Cover nuts are fairly inexpensive.

the threads on the case or weak now ,so even a new nut probably wont hold

I had the same problem, a new nut fixed it.

Try a search on the topic ,there is a fair bit of information and opinion on here re that topic/repair .

Don't they also have some kind of thread chaser to recut (?) the threads?

Tristate marine a makes them http://stores.ebay.com//id=37627197&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSX:SST if this carrier is a CLE carrier and not a fishing mota carrier it heavy enough to pin the carrier but not with 1/4 bolts 1/8 grade 8 will do nicely

PS you know they torque down to 250lbs

i think that would be the problem, if you can't get it to torque to 250 ft/lbs because the threads are done and just weld the nut the carrier will wobble in the case and the unit will be short lived

good point id have to be sure it is torqued enough to make the carrier seat well ,i think there enough threads to torque it but i dont think it will hold at operating speeds

if you can do that then pin it, don't weld it

ive seen someone who put 4 bolts thru carrier and case and the bolts broke but
this was on a dual enginne boat and it probably was the left hand rotation lower so there is a lot more pressure on the carrieer nut
so pinning it very well may work

where would it be pinned ? i would guess the way i have seen it done

I actually built this one in our machine room several years ago. It has save many cases. Usually rechasing the threads and a new nut will solve the problem. In some instances it just takes a new housing regardless. At one time there were some after market STEEL spanner nuts that were .002-.003 larger to fix this common problem. I haven't seen but one in years. This tool can be easily made by most any machine shop for a reasonable fee if it is not readily available elswhere.

Are you using a standard or sporty nut? If your using a standard one order a sporty one - they are about 1/4" thicker and might get you into some better threads. We put them in stock cases with that problem then pin it with hardened roll pins.

i will get a sporty nut !
do you have a picture of a pin installed?

the point of contact is when face of case nut touch's the carrier it has no idea how thick it is, it will go not deeper it will only bare on more threads behind it but may increase holding power by this method but it will not find new threads as its bottomed out when it tight it just wont stay there:cool:

PM Jimmy (keys boy) and maybe he can send you a pic - he just
did his bobs case with an pro alpha carrier, sporty nut and pinned it.
