That's completely normal..... the helm is a pump and a set of valves all in one. When you change direction with the steering wheel, there is a little amount of rotation neede to open and close the valves. during this time, the engine remains locked in it's position. depending on the system and speed, you can turn the wheel 360* every 10 minutes or less....... Hydraulic steering is very safe.

I have grown up on hyd. Have had sea star (non pro) in 2 vee bottoms and my mirage. Its awesome, I had it in the action at 100 and never had an issue. The mirage I could drink beer, smoke a cigar, talk on my cell phone and steer with my knee at 100++

I have herd the pro systems dont do that. I never noticed having to "walk" my wheel the whole time and we do alot of 70+mph cruising...

You wont have any trouble mounting it to the 2.5 on the action and I could show you 6hrs worth you videos of my action and about 50 people from this board who could vouch for its lack of handling issues. It has had seastar (not pro, fishin boat version) since I & beef have had it and although the amount of steering input required to effect the boat is 2x that of dual cable its just a matter of getting used to it. As with anything else it ALL COMES DOWN TO SEAT TIME AND KNOWING YOUR LIMITS. Here is one of MANY clips from the last 4 years

In looking at that video that system is definately not a Sea Star or Sea Star Pro. The one in that video appears to be a rear steer single ram type (if that)??.
I've had two Dual Ram Sea Star Pro's now on two different boats. Either of mine have that much free wheel in them. 1/8" to 1/4" max and that is at the outer most diameter of the wheel. And like Flabum said thats only because it's activating a directional valve. Until the helmpump presurizes the system the engine stay's locked. I can let go of the wheels at 80 + (no problem). I can run the one boat (liberator) 100+ with one hand on the wheel. If installed correctly and properly bleed you can't beat them.

With cable steering the torque of the prop is a constant push against the wheel which is why there is very little movement. I still have callouses on my left hand from holding wheel so tight from cable steering.
With the Seastar there is no steering torque at all. There is a minute amount of play that is easily adjusted to balance the boat. The Allison ram has the least amount of play and is worth the extra money in very high speed applications. I have a the Seastar pro on my Viking and at 100 mph it's very stable and easy.
I would never, ever go back to cable.

Do you have a problem with the wheel slowly creeping and your trim buttons end up upsidedown
or do you just wind it to lock and then force over the pressure relief to re align them?

I use a signal trim.

Mounts right to the helm. Never interfears with the steering wheel. I'll seeif I can post some information on them. Maybe someone else will chime in on this.

This is made by Teleflex. This one in the pic is for trim and Jackplate but they make a signal for either one. Mounts to hub behind steering wheel.. Very nice setup.

No it mounts to the reservoir that the steering shaft goes thru. It never moves.

seastar pro comes with brackets that mount to ends of tilt tube, very good instructions with the kit ,i had allways used cable & was doubtfull that seastar would be as good ,, until i installed & used it for 5 minutes,i will never go back to cable !just bleed system properly & do check fastners & bolts & nuts before going to water ,oh ,they come with an arp pivott bolt for the tiller arm ,,good stuff!

The only other steering that you should ever consider other than hydraulic would be "true" cable steering for a race only, purpose built boat. Even though the steering "slips" a little as far as wheel placement goes, it is very, very, very safe.

Do I tell them I need that bracket ? Or does it come with the Kit ?
