I am looking for any easy/cheap tricks to gain some extra HP out of this old motor. Any Ideas? I have heard milled heads are a good place to start. Is that true?

140 intake and reeds. You will need to rejet.

I don't suppose anyone has a used intake for it lying around??? I could put on boyesen reeds I assume and I can order the jets from Evinrude parts. Unless any of you Evinrude guru's have some extra parts lying around....
I am also having difficulties finding someone to mill my heads in Dallas, Texas. Does anyone know someone good I could contact?
Thanks!

Ok, I have someone coming over this week to check what jets I have and when we pull the jets I want to get the heads milled at a local machine shop too. Do you guys know how much clearance should be left to allow for piston to head clearance?

What you need to know is what C.C. these should be cut to and still use Premium gas.

Ok then does anyone know what C.C. these should be cut to and still use Premium gas? Again it is a 1987 120 HP Evinrude Looper.

A 87 looper has flat top pistons. Like your decal change
Team Brown Stripe
02-01-2010, 04:30 PM
Yeah the boat is only rated for a 115 so I put 115 decals on it.
Ok so with flat top pistons how far should I get the heads milled? Or are you saying it doesn't matter? Sorry I am just a noob at this. Thats why I have someone coming over to remove the jets so I can tell you what I have.
BTW, thanks for all the help Racer.

1 more thing my brother Sl!ck removed the can out of his 2.0 150hp Merc. And it freakin sounds AWESOME!!! Does my evinrude have a similar can? I was told it is in 2 pieces. Any ideas on which piece I should remove? Or should I remove both?

Cut the heads , install some 140 carbs(225 carbs), reeds-jet the idles down a little smaller. If you want it louder just install a land&sea exhaust snout. That way you can still plug the holes when you get tired of hearing the thing or just want to sneak up on some fish!

I am already working on the 140 mods with racer. I just need to know how much I can "Cut Off" the heads so it will run on regular premium gas.

Racer did not have the carbs so I bought a set of 225 Carbs with Intake and reed blocks off ebay. You mentioned I will need to "jet the idles down a little smaller." How much smaller? Can I use the Idle jets out of the 120 Carbs?
If you want it louder just install a land&sea exhaust snout. That way you can still plug the holes when you get tired of hearing the thing or just want to sneak up on some fish!
I would like it louder but I do not want to spend the Extra $$$ on a land&sea exhaust snout. Can I remove the entire can or just the bottom half? If not that can I drill some holes to make it louder? If I need to sneak up on some fish I will stop sooner and put down the trolling motor
Thanks for the info!!

If you plan on changing the reeds to boysen then you change your idles about 6-8 jet sizes smaller. This will richen up the idle circuit so it does not spit lean thru the front of the engine. As far as the exhaust goes I go with the snout from Bobs Machine or land& sea. I've seen some people on here with some aluminum fabrication that's nice also. I don't do any of the drilling into the lower mid (It's just not my thing). Although, if you do a search you will find some of this. Sorry if this doesn't help.

I was running a 24" raker but I had to run with the motor and jackplate all the way down or it would break free. With the Renegade I have it 3"s above the transom and it never breaks free. The best I could do is 52MPH with the 24" Raker and with the 21" Renegade I am at 56.5MPH.

With stock exhaust port on a 3.5 inch bore, 44ish cc heads and 48cc on the 3.685 inch bore will give you good pump fuel compression. You will have to rejet. :smiletest:

I have already purchased the Carbs, Intake, Reed Boxes & Reeds off a 1993 225 Looper. I was told that the top half parts are the same as the 140. Well except that it has 6 pedal reeds where as the 120 has 4 and the 140 has 5. 87action19 mentioned I need to re-jet the idle jets smaller do I still need to do that if I am using the matching Intake, Reed boxes and 6 pedal reeds?
Laker
02-10-2010, 11:05 AM
You want to use the 6 pedal reed cages, the carbs might be an improvement depending on the sizes you actually have now compaired to what you bought. You will not be able to use the V6 airbox. Remove the internal baffles of your V4 air box to smooth out the flow. You will need to adjust your jetting for sure.

So I should use the #16 Idle jets from the 120 Carbs?

Ok here is what I have. These are the numbers stamped on the metal plate on the side of the carbs.
The 4 top carbs of the 225 set are 396968
The 2 bottom carbs of the 225 set are 396969
Now on the 120 carbs I looked and this is what I had.
The 2 on the passenger side of the boat were 398161
and the 2 on the drivers side were 398371

install some 140 carbs(225 carbs), reeds-jet the idles down a little smaller.
Ok well here is where I am currently at. I found a set of 6 225hp Carbs and Intake with 6 pedal reed boxes. I disassembled and cleaned all 4 of the carbs I used and bought a set of 225 6 pedal Boyesen reeds. I noticed that the 225 Intake was about 1/4 deeper than the 120. It runs pretty good but I only gained about 400 RPMs on a 23" Renegade. I really thought with adding 20+ HP I would see better performance. It also seems to be running rich because the back of the motor was black around the exhaust & the boat had a black line around it that I had to use a strong degreaser to remove. Now with that being said the stock timing for the 120 was 18 degrees BTDC but it is actually at 20 degrees BTDC. I assume that is due to the thicker intake. Should I advance it more or retard it back to 18? Or do I need to change the jets? When I first ran the motor it was sneezing thru the carbs so I put the 120 idle jets in it and it seems to idle perfect.
Any Ideas?????
Laker

18 degrees
I need the number cast into the plastic carb body on the top or side. Not the float bowl, throttle body or circuit plate. The number needed is on the outside of the plastic throat, either top or side.
Also sent you a PM :smiletest:

A v-6.
I have entertained the Idea of the 200 but you said it has only 90PSI on all the cylinders. It sounds like it is about time for a rebuild. While I appreciate the offer it sounds like it would require a lot more work.

90 is normal compression for most of the V-6 OMC's as they have idle reliefs in them that lower the compression in the lower RPM's. What main jets are you running in it?
Team Brown Stripe

The Carbs are PN: 395039 and the main jets are 57D's

Thanks for the info but your a little late I already paid $200 for Boyesen reeds.
I have gutted the air box per Lakers recommendation and upped my fuel pressure to 3 PSI @ WOT.
I will buy some better oil to help control the "sooting"
