Jeff, don't take a Yamaha sled near water. Just check the "water ship down" boards for the skip through the canal at Dorset.
At the end of last year it was:
Skidoo=4
Arctic Cat=6
Polaris=7
Yamaha=17
Them yammies don't like to puddle jump!!!! Of course I prejudice, I ride a 2000 Formula Z 700
For those who don't know the Dorset canal is a 1/4 mile concrete walled canal 30ft deep with a good current through it so it doesn't freeze most of the time. It is a popular "puddle jump" and lots of guys don't make it every year. All of the bars maintain a "watership down" scoreboard.
We were at Houghton Lake for Tip-up-Town a couple years ago. That's a huge lake, and during that week, hundreds of cars and trucks with trailers park out on the ice, there are thousands of sleds on the lake at one time. There's a big football field-sized patch of open water on the lake where the river comes in, we were watching guys race across. they were approaching at 30 mph, then gunning it as they splashed in, racing to the other side. They were leaning back and hitting the throttle, pulling the skis up, kicking up a spray, acting like they were on jet-skis. We watched a guy stall his machine, the water was waist-deep and the air was 5 degrees F, damn cold. It took him about 15 minutes to wade back to the ice, get a rope to hook up, and tow his pig out.

We normally only do this sort of nonsense on Sunday afternoons. That way if you go down, and can't get the sled restarted later, it doesn't ruin your whole weekend. Up here if you sink a sled in deep water the salvage guys charge $15 a foot to go and get it for you!
I'm too old for deep water runnin'. Waist deep and 4-500ft long is good enough for me.

Back when I lived in the frozen north, we used to do the water crossing thing in the summer time. It gave us a chance to fire them up while waiting for the snow to come again. Never thought about doing it in the winter but then again we didn't have any water that didn't freeze near by. Sounds like fun though but can't imagine going in the water in the middle of the winter to fish out your sled. BURRRRRRRRRRRR !!!!!!! :D
I found the photo from tip up town. This was getting close to evening, so the picture's a bit dim. At the far left, you can see the headlight of someone getting sprayed real bad.

I never thought of a V-King as a rough water boat but I never compared it to a Polaris. :D :cool: Keep it out of the trees!!

I got to agree with that one, a friend of mine almost sank his.
Those yammies seem to pull a water mist in through the clutch
venting, when that clutch starts spinnig and the track stops
churning thats a badddddd feeling.:( I know I almost put my
zr 600 under.:D PKRBRKR1 what part of the state do you ride
in? I do alot of riding around conover, land o lakes and up into
the upper penn of mich.
