Allison produced a boat called the GT20, but did they ever make an R20? And if so how did this differ from the GT model; layup/construction, production numbers, etc...? Any input, pic's, is greatly appreciated.

The R20 didnt have a floor it was a stringer boat don't know about weight. They also made a SS20 that had a molded int. Tom

Is the R20 a cored boat or a comp model like a Hydrostream?

Yes They Did Make An R 20 . I still own one . It was a factory stringer boat ,with center steering ,and just a single seat . It is not a light weight by any meens . I beleive mine was a Marathon boat originaly , so that may acount for the weight .
There are some pics of it over on Allison Owners ,as it was when I got the boat out of Al.
It Was Very Rough !!!

Rich- do you have any pic's of the resto you did on your R20? I just picked this one up last night and don't even have it back to my house yet. It is in rough shape. The POS trailer it is on punched a hole in the bottom, so it will need alot of attention. from the pic's i have seen am i wrong in saying the pad has a concave shape, or is it an illusion? I attached a few pic's from my camera phone- hope to get better ones soon...

WOW , That looks like the sister ship to mine . What year is it , mines an '80 . It's a crying shame ,they let it sit on that roller trailer out in the weather . Poor girl looks to be pretty bad off . Mine was in excelent condintion ,next to that one . The core ,and transom on mine was solid and still original . A freind and I , replaced the knees ,stringers and sub floor . As you can see in the pics , we didn't put any box back in it for the seat . It is just flat on the floor .

It too is a 1980. I hope this weekend to get it off the trailer, clean up the inside, and get a full assessment of the damage. I have two other projects awaiting the warm weather- this makes three...and time for none!!!!

I joined the Allison forums and noticed in a few pic's that guys were using sheets of plywood for the core...is that how the factory did it?

Rich- if you have any additional pic's of your boat it would be greatly appreciated. Also- do you know anyone who would know more about this hull, like production numbers and such. I can't find any info on it, as that would lead me to believe it might be a bit rare.

Thanks...Bob

No , We didn't get pics of it during the repair , that I remember . If we did , Slider may have them . Not sure of the production numbers on the R 20's . Yours is the thrird one I've seen now . The other on is red and white ,with twin 2.0 liter motor . Heard there was another twin rig at one time , but never seen it . We added a lip to the tail of the pad to help it fly closer to level ,as you really had to stick the nose up in the air without it . With a mild Modified 2.4 , I was about 93 mph ,if I remember correctly . The core matterial is Balsa , and on mine , it was the entire bottom of the boat , up into the V under the deck . If I recall , the center stingers under the floor , go from the transom to the front bulkhead at your feet , on the outer egdes of the pad . The outboard stringes/knees , tie into the transom ,and contiue forward to the front bulkhead , on top of the strakes . Mine has two seats in it in tandom , as there in no good way to put a bench in the back .

OK, so I'm guessing this is a GT, I had another on a few years ago that was red and white. There is a T in the HIN Not an R so I'm guessing it's a GT. I'm planning on starting on it here shortly, I have minimized my projects :D:D:D:D

Hey Ronnie- yes, it's the one. For some reason the biggest pile of sh*ts seem to follow me home. I honestly don't know what I am going to do with it; clean the snow out and see what's really going on. I will get better pic's this weekend and post them.

Rich- thanks for the info.

Jacob- I will check the VIN this weekend and post that as well. I know there is one, that's how I determined it's an '80.

Not sure , Looks like it could be an "R" . Mine did have the floor from the top of the stringers out . And the center steer suggest it is . Othere wise , someone has gutted a GT . Although the seat mount isn't correct for an "R" . It should have been a box , that created a bulkhead at midship .

I might have some pics laying around. I lost a hard drive a while back and don't know if they were on it. That bottom looks rough. I wouldn't even know where to begin. Good luck!

Holy Sh_t ! Just went though that whole file . I forgot how much of a project that was . But worth every minute of it . I'll tell you this right now . It wouldn't have gotten done without Sliders help !!!

That Old Boat collected it's share of trophys in the Vintage Class , with the FBI Drag Racing Club .

What A Trip Down Memory Lane That Was !

Thanks Mark

Thanks for posting these. You guys did a great job.

I have a GT-20 that may need some restoration one day. I was wondering what paint or "coating" for lack of a better term that you guys used to paint the floor inside of the hull once all the glass work was completed. It looks to be white with some colored (maybe black?) paint splatter print. My GT-20 has a factory black coating. I performed a small repair (glass work) in the enclosed transom area. I want to make it look somewhat uniform so I need to put some paint over my glass. I did not want to just buy and install "any old spray paint". Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, fellas.

The interior , is Grey Gel , that I rolled and brushed in . The Splatter , is nothing more then Blue Paint , slunge in with a brush . If you do slinge the splatter in . Take a scrap peice ,and take a couple of swings at it ,to get your desired effect/technec worked out . Also , besure to mask off more then you think you need to , an unmask as soon as your done ,so you can clean up and slop that Will Net Through .

Yeah, those pics brought back some good memories. We splurged and used epoxy throughout. Much easier to work with than polyester. I am scratching just thinking about it though. I think I became allergic to fiberglass after that job.

Rich did the artwork on the inside. From what I remember it was white gelcoat. Once that dried, just some tinted gelcoat or paint splattered with a paint brush.

I have always loved these boats. There are a couple beat-up ones floating around South Florida that pop up for sale every once in a while. May pick one up some day, but for now I have too many other projects going.

One was on craiglist in the last couple months, I posted a link in the "hulls wanted" forum.
