I simply have way too much good footage from last year but this clip is a bit unique in that its very continuous and I'm paying close attention and not looking all over the place(I wonder why!) It made for a simple edit, once I found a tune I liked.
We tagged a fair bit but honestly less than I was expecting. More than a few "hang on" calls were given to the passenger which were unecessary :D
enjoy!

Do you guys run polymer on the bottom?

These 17's could be had(they dont make em anymore) either bare, with QT100 steel and/or the UHMW bow.
The basic keel is 1/2" 6061 T6 and is about 8 feet long
Mine has just the steel which covers the middle portion of that keelplate
I think soon Ill make an extension in steel that covers the middle ~6" of the bow, all the way to the bow eye. Ive hit a few things in that area which makes me think I could use a bit of strength right on that joint.
Myles boat (the red one) is older and has the bigger fuel tank, the steel and the UHMW nose protection. The UHMW to me isnt really a great option as it adds weight, alot of holes and you really "shouldnt" be hitting this type of boat in that area anyway really. (Its only up front) add to that fact he ripped 90% of it off on a late season run and Im not sure its worth the hassle and upkeep. Its only 1/4" thick so its not really thick enough to add any strength, just abrasion resistance
Weight is crucial in these boats, and I guess I just dont like the tradeoff
You can see the bottom of Myles boat pretty good in this vid

And the bottom of mine during construction, main steel keel is not in the photo but the smaller bow extension peice is(this part needs to be extended to the bow eye IMO) ...

Very cool!!! Ever since I've seen those I wanted a ride! :)
How about a pic of the boat?
So the steel is lighter than the UHMW? Or you use a thinner piece?

No but the steel actually adds alot of strength (its 100 000 psi) so its a much better "weight" to add and honestly I think you'd be insane to have one of these boats without it. (or just really like working with aluminum in your spare time haha)
You would be amazed at how easy it is to bend/dent 1/2" aluminum even when its formed in a radius like that. Ive seen a few of these boats in for new keels cause the old ones were literally beaten flat
Also if you're up on step and driving "properly" you should only be touching that steel clad area anyway. remember this is a 20 degree hull so there is no valid excuse for hitting the boat in the step area or chines etc Well unless you just plain screwed up lol
Now with that said I have a dent/crease just to the right of the bow eye on the side panel, ahead of the navigation light way up high(!!!) from hitting a stump while sliding over a gravel bar. Only stump for 300 yards too, I swear it was pulling me in like a f$#king tracktor beam or something LOL :D Its like slow motion when you're sliding and cant steer, I bet my buddy watching from way back was killing himself laughing when he saw that one lol
It comes with the territory you're going to get dings here and there. Im pretty impressed I havent nailed a rear corner and punched it in yet as that seems to be a common problem when you're sliding thru tight channels. Then again I've "braced for that impact" many times but....
