View Full Version : allison xb'02/'03 motors?

as we speak, looking at the allison web site... questions arise..
first, being over 20 feet, there is no max hp, right? BUT since allison has given recommendations, 90-150hp for the xb2002, and 115-175hp, does it pose a problem for insurability to go above those figures? almost every one of those two models i read about here has AT LEAST 200hp, so you guys ought to know.
second, supposing i bought one and put on a stock 2.5L fishmota, within the recommended power/weight, IOW a 150 for an '02 or 175 for an '03, what kind of speeds could i expect? maybe standard tournament bass boat speeds, like low 70's?
also, a lot are pre-rigged for mercs. how hard is it to re-rig for an omc, if i were to find a decent 2.5 v6 fishmota for a decent price, [not too hard to do around here]?
why my obsession with fishmotas? i don't fish. but i am an amateur car racer, and since i started building my own race motors, i really appreciate the extra durability i get, the farther from the edge i build them. if i'm wrong about high-strung, racy merc outboards, please tell me. i'm totally open to being convinced.

Yes, due to the "stupid-sticker" on the A-boats it can be quite a problem getting insurance. Mine has a 225 PMax and it is insured with State Farm.
When you stay within the recommended HP you still end up with a 80 MPH rig.
I would stay with the 2.5 Mercs since the 02 and 03 hulls can get quirky with a tall heavy engine like and OMC or a 3 litre Merc.
A Merc Promax is very dependable, I went over a thousand hours on my first powerhead and Jay Smith can build one even more reliable than the stock one.
I love my A-boat, but you have to be a high-horspepower pilot to drive a high horsepower A-boat.....

where does one buy a promax? are there light 150's and 175's out there? this place (http://www.outboardexchange.com/175_evinrude/index.html)claims their 2.5L omc's weigh 375lbs. they sell rebuilt mercs too, but i can't tell if they are promax or not. in fact i'm not sure what exactly a promax is, in relation to other mercury's. where can i go to find out about merc's promax line? are they still made?

I didn't have any problems getting mine covered. Just told them it was unlimited. I am with Alfa. Have a 225 Pro Max on mine.

never knew about this place (outboard exchange). Their weight on the 175 Evinrude is correct. Their price is not bad considering what a new one costs, and if you live close and they stand behind their warranty.
I've been selling remanufactured OMC V4s and V6s and Merc V6s on a local basis for years and I thought my price was expensive ($2900 to $4200 for a V4 or 150-175 Merc V6 depending on equipment and rigging). Now I guess I should raise my prices!

nooo... don't raise your prices... yet! ;) not until i buy an allison to put one of your mota's on. in all seriousness, there is another thread on here where they were bagging on obex's high prices and pointing out someone here who has better prices... maybe it was you? i'll have to go back and look.
as to the weight of the omc 2.5L 175hp motors, 375 seems very reasonably light. yet JR IN JAX says the 2.5L promax's are lighter still. are they? i can't seem to find _anything_ online about merc promax's, and nobody has been able to point me to any sites that have info about them.

I like the fishing motor/Allison combination. MY SS2000 is close to 90 with a 1990 150 XR4 (stock except tuner, reeds, solid mounts, Bobs cone).
That's fast enough, and my powerhead has never been apart. How many 2.5 guys can say that?
Merc no longer makes the Promax. It used to come in 150, 200, and 225. The 225 was by far the most common, and when people refer to a Promax, they usually mean 225.
