Just got a used prop with the flow torque hub. The piece that slides in from the bottom of the prop has play in it side to side and up and down. Is that normal? I've slid it on the prop shaft but didn't tighten it down yet. Any info would be great, this is my first prop with this style hub. Thanks.

How much play side to side and in/out?

Small shaft and there's like a 1/4" play each way. I was told the proper thrust hub would take up the up and down movement.

Just tightened up the prop and there is no play at all, but the only thing holding it from spinning is the force of the nut. I feel it wil still spin side to side when going forward and reverse. I really don't want the prop banging back in forth because of the backlash from side to side. As soon as I loosen the nut it gets real sloppy on the shaft.

Sounds like you have the cast metal high performance hub and it's missing the Delrin (Acetal) side pads. It's not uncommon for them to fall off while the hub is out of the prop.
Might want to post a pic of the hub, the part number cast into the hub and the prop you are using as there are two different high perf hubs for the small shaft applicaion. That will get you an exact answer.

Stitch King, I am missing the pads. The number on the hub is 850821-1. Don't know how to post pictures on here, but I can email them to you if you like. Is there a specific thrust hub that has to be used for this? Thanks.

Merc's site lists various hub kits they are now selling, along with usage/application info. The URL is http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/us/hub-kits-c1851.html.

Do you have the sleeve that splines onto the propshaft and the hub with the prop locking crown on it? It sounds like you're missing this part. That is simply too much play.

Yes, I have the hub that slides into the rear of the prop and the piece with the splines that slides into the front of prop and into the hub, along with the tab washer and nut. The hub that fits inside of prop is just to loose.

Here's a post that can clear up a lot.

I sent a PM with my email. Send a pic of what you have.

Ken, that pretty much solved the problem. My prop is a Ron Hill 28" chopper and the 28 is the only number on the hub. Also, the hub in mine comes about a 1/4 from the base of the prop when inserted. Thats why I couldn't find a thrust washer to fit it. I'll snap a few shots later today and send them to you.
