I am trying to help my brother with his motor and it is not getting spark? He just bought the boat and knows nothing about it. I checked for spark and get nothing. This is a efi motor and has the ecm ignition. Can someone please help me figure this out. What can I check and how do I check it? Thanks
David
I am in Texas(Lake Conroe) right now, not at home in Maryland.

Unplug the coil packs one at a time until you have spark, the one that remains unplugged is bad. I had this problem, and seems the coils have a common ground, and when one shorts out, none will fire. I am not positive this is your problem, but worth a quick try.

Check the ignition ecu plug make sure it is clean with no corrosion and plugged in (top ecu of the 2)... second make sure the crank pickup is not missing and plugged in, it is located above the starboard head and oicks up off the flywheel... if all that is ok check the inline fuse y the starter solenoid if that is missing or poped you won't have any ignition or fuel pump... if all that is ok then check the coils as rchevelle said

Fel free to call if you have any questions

Cool,

Glad you got it fixed. I have had a few electrical gremlins with the 3 liters. I now secure all electrical connections with tie wraps, or whatever will keep them in place, and ran redundant grounds on the new motor, purrs like a kitten now.

One other plug to look at is the main engine harness plug - separate the two and use a knife to spread the noses of the pins a bit so they make good contact when plugged back together. I used to work walleye tournaments for Mercury and lost count years ago on how many pins I would spread to cure an electrical problem.
